Does your child struggle with using their fingers? Try this simple activity. Give your child some clothespins and ask them to pick them up and attach them to a box or paper plate. This can help develop hand strength and fine-motor control.”

Is your child crashing into, The couch. The walls. The floor. You.!
It might look wild... but it’s actually information
Some kids are sensory seekers which means their body is craving input - especially deep pressure + movement.
So they:
• crash
• jump
• tackle
• push their body HARD
Not to be destructive... but to feel regulated
Their body is literally trying to figure out:
“Where am I in space?”

Slime is satisfying because it triggers a chemical reward response in the brain through a combination of sensory feedback, predictable control, and stress relief. It creates a deeply soothing loop that quickly captures human attention and calms the nervous system.

The Psychology and Science of “Satisfying”
• ASMR and Brain Tingles: The soft crunching, popping, and squishing sounds mimic Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) triggers. These sounds prompt the brain to release pleasure hormones like oxytocin and dopamine, inducing a state of mild euphoria.

• Mindless Focus (Flow State): Manipulating slime requires just enough attention to distract from outside worries, but not enough to cause mental fatigue. This creates a psychological “flow state” that rests an overstimulated mind.

Ultimate Control: Slime responds instantly to any amount of pressure, shape, or pull. In a world full of unpredictable stressors, having total control over a physical substance provides a comforting sense of safety and agency!

Sitting on a scooter board and pulling a rope requires hand-over-hand coordination, core stability, and motor planning.

In real life, these are the exact same skills a child needs to maintain balance on a moving school bus, sit upright at a classroom desk without getting tired, and build the upper body strength required to safely navigate playground climbing frames!

Why pediatric OTs focus on the arms and legs...
The limbs are packed with proprioceptive receptors. When we apply slow, deep pressure using a tactile roller, we are helping the child map their body in space.

This heavy work input downregulates an overstimulated fight-or-flight response, paving the way for better focus, smoother transitions, and deeper sleep.

Always check in with your child’s occupational therapist for personalized sensory diet strategies.

A body sock might look simple, but the gentle compression and deep pressure can help create a sense of calm, regulation, and security for little bodies (and big feelings).
These activities in a body sock can be soothing or encourage stretching, all while providing tactile and proprioceptive input. From dynamic movements to cozy compression, each of these ideas provides some purpose to the silly fun.

For children with tactile aversion, diving straight into wet or sticky textures can feel overwhelming to their nervous system. That’s why we take a systematic, Sensory Integration approach:
1. Prep the nervous system: We started with a cart ride with sudden starts and stops. This heavy work provides organizing proprioceptive input to help calm and regulate the nervous system.
2. Visual acceptance: Introducing the watermelon in a closed box first allows the child to adapt visually without feeling threatened.
3. The tactile challenge: Once regulated, we progressed to picking up and returning the wet, cool watermelon pieces-building tolerance, confidence, and regulation one step at a time!
