ABA therapy should be more than teaching a child to comply. It should support communication, independence, emotional well-being, and skills that genuinely improve everyday life for the learner. That’s why our practice is guided by five non-negotiables: assent over compliance, individualized goals, data-guided decisions, dignity and safety, and family collaboration.

We listen to verbal and non-verbal communication, including signs that a learner needs a break or wants to withdraw. We set goals that are meaningful, functional, measurable, and tailored to the individual. We use data to understand progress and make informed changes, while prioritizing least-intrusive and respectful teaching approaches. Most importantly, we recognize caregivers as essential partners in goal-setting, generalization, and progress monitoring.

In ABA, effective reinforcement begins with understanding what is meaningful and motivating to the individual learner.

A reinforcer is not necessarily a toy or tangible item. It may be a preferred activity, social interaction, movement, attention, sensory experience, or an individual interest.

This is why we take time to observe the learner’s preferences and responses rather than assuming what they will find reinforcing. What works for one learner may not work for another and what is reinforcing today may change over time.

By identifying meaningful reinforcers, we can incorporate the learner’s interests into teaching and use reinforcement purposefully to increase appropriate responding, engagement, and

WH-questions are an important part of developing a functional language repertoire. In ABA, teaching a learner to respond to questions involves more than simply memorizing answers, we are teaching the learner to attend to the relevant stimulus, discriminate what information the question is asking for, and give an appropriate response.

Questions such as β€œWhat is he doing?”, β€œWhere is it?”, or β€œWho is that?” etc help build different types of verbal responding and provide opportunities to practice language across a variety of situations.

During teaching, prompts may be used to establish the correct response and are gradually faded as the learner becomes more independent. Reinforcement is provided for appropriate responding, helping strengthen the skill.

We also aim for generalization, so the learner can respond to WH-questions across different people, materials, settings, and naturally occurring situations.

Ultimately, the goal is to develop language that is functional, flexible, and useful in everyday interactions.

A question may seem simple, but learning how to understand and respond to it is an important part of communication. πŸ’™

AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) refers to the different ways and tools people can use to communicate when speech is not sufficient or not their primary way of communicating. This can include gestures, signs, pictures, communication boards, objects, or high-tech AAC devices.

AAC can help children communicate their wants, needs, choices, feelings, ideas, and responses while supporting greater independence and participation in everyday life.

Most importantly, AAC is not about replacing communication, it is about giving a child a reliable way to communicate 🀍
