According to the Oxford Book of Pathophysiology, emphysema is defined as:

"A chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) characterized by permanent enlargement of the airspaces distal to the terminal bronchioles, accompanied by destruction of their walls and loss of alveolar surface area, leading to breathlessness and impaired gas exchange."

Key features of emphysema include:

1. Irreversible airflow limitation
2. Airspace enlargement and destruction
3. Loss of alveolar surface area
4. Impaired gas exchange
5. Breathlessness (dyspnea)

The book also notes that emphysema is often associated with:

1. Smoking
2. Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency
3. Age-related decline in lung function
4. Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress

Pathophysiological mechanisms underlying emphysema include:

1. Protease-antiprotease imbalance
2. Oxidative stress and inflammation
3. Apoptosis (programmed cell death)
4. Disrupted lung matrix and tissue repair

32. On account of this, We prescribed (this commandment in the Torah sent down) to the Children of Israel that whoever killed a person (unjustly), except as a punishment for murder or for (spreading) disorder in the land, it would be as if he killed all the people (of society); and whoever (saved him from unjust murder and) made him survive, it would be as if he saved the lives of all the people (of society, i.e., he rescued the collective system of human life). And indeed, Our Messengers came to them with evident signs. Yet, even after that, the majority from amongst these people are certainly those who commit excesses in the land.
( سورۃ الْمَآئِدَة، 5 : 32)
