What is Glimepiride?
Glimepiride is a generic medicine used to treat Type 2 Diabetes. It belongs to a class called sulfonylureas. It helps your pancreas release more insulin to lower blood sugar.
5 Key Points for Patients:
1. How to take: Usually once daily with breakfast or the first main meal. Take it at the same time each day.
2. Common dose: Doctors often start with 1mg or 2mg daily. Do not change your dose yourself.
3. Main side effect: Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Signs = sweating, shaking, dizziness, hunger, confusion. Always carry sugar/candy.
4. Caution: Avoid skipping meals + avoid alcohol — both increase hypo risk.
5. Who should avoid: Type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe kidney/liver disease, pregnancy. Ask your doctor.
Golden Rule: Glimepiride works best with diet + exercise + regular sugar checks. Medicine alone is not enough.
