🌍💊 World Drug Abuse Day Panel Discussion at SIPM&R
The Anti-Drug & To***co Committee (ANTC) of Sindh Institute of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (SIPM&R) organized a thought-provoking panel discussion on ""Combating Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking: Prevention, Rehabilitation, and Community Action" on 7th July 2026 to mark World Drug Abuse Day.
The event commenced with a welcome address by Prof. Dr. Syed Imran Ahmed, Additional Executive Director, Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC), who welcomed the distinguished guests and highlighted SIPM&R's commitment to rehabilitation, education, and research.
He emphasized that drug abuse is no longer confined to uneducated segments of society but has become an increasing concern among educated youth and students, underscoring the vital role of educational institutions in prevention through awareness and early intervention. He also appreciated the efforts of the Anti-Drug & To***co Committee and concluded the event by presenting certificates of appreciation and bouquets to the esteemed panelists.
The distinguished panelists included:
• Prof. Dr. Nabila Najam Soomro – Executive Director, SIPM&R
• Dr. Ramesh Kumar Vankwani – Member, National Assembly of Pakistan
• Dr. Nooreen Begum – Senior Clinical Psychologist, ANF Hospital, MATRC, Karachi
• Dr. Nazish Anwer – Consultant Psychiatrist & Head of Department, Child, Adolescent and Female Unit, MATRC, ANF Lyari Centre
• Madam Shabana Kamran – Social Scientist, Islamic Scholar, and Lecturer, SIPM&R
During the discussion, Prof. Dr. Nabila Najam Soomro urged students to stay away from drugs and other addictive substances, emphasizing that a healthy, disciplined, and purpose-driven life is the foundation of personal and professional success. She encouraged students to make positive choices and become responsible ambassadors of a drug-free society.
Honorable MNA Dr. Ramesh Kumar Vankwani appreciated SIPM&R's dedicated efforts in rehabilitation and drug prevention through awareness and community engagement. He emphasized that all religions strongly condemn the use of drugs and intoxicants and encouraged young people to uphold these values.
The panelists highlighted the physical, psychological, social, and academic consequences of drug abuse and emphasized the importance of awareness, early intervention, rehabilitation, and active community participation in addressing substance abuse. Students were encouraged to make informed decisions, seek professional support when needed, and contribute towards building a safe, healthy, and drug-free society.
