The Epistemology of Transcendent Love
Anything—including transcendent love (Ishq)—that dares to challenge our intellect will inevitably plunge it into a profound state of wonder and bewilderment. Ishq is not the domain of the insane; it is the ultimate pursuit of the intellectually profound. Had this path been meant for the mad, a polymath like Rumi, a visionary writer like Mansur Al-Hallaj (revered by the Persians as Hallaj al-Asrar, the Carder of Secrets), and a master poet like Attar—all of whom were the most brilliant intellectuals of their respective eras—would never have embraced it.
Therefore, to perpetuate the myth that Ishq is the business of the deranged is, in itself, an act of sheer madness.
It is undeniably true, however, that Ishq relentlessly tests the boundaries of reason, guiding it through realms where the intellect is ultimately forced to surrender. This capitulation occurs simply because human psychology and consciousness possess no existing "frame of reference" for such exalted dimensions. But this by no means implies that anything lacking a cognitive framework within the human mind should be stripped of its status as 'knowledge' and abruptly dismissed as mere lunacy.
While it is true that a seeker on the path of love traverses territories where the absence of a familiar paradigm forces them to set rationality aside, it does not prove that these realms exist outside the sphere of knowledge. Rather, it would be far more accurate to say that they are simply beyond the current limits of human epistemology. When the human intellect and reason fail to fully comprehend these sublime mysteries, the mind does not descend into insanity; instead, it transcends into a state of divine ecstasy and spiritual intoxication.
