Plant a tree under whose shade you may never sit.

From a Quote in 2014 to a Purpose in 2026
In September 2014, when I had just become a consultant, I shared a simple quote:
“Strong people stand up for themselves. But the strongest people stand up for others.”
At that time, it was just a thought that resonated with me.

Today, 12 years later, I see that thought differently.

This photograph is of a 4th-year medical student, getting his first exposure to hands-on surgical training and simulation. He is still at the beginning of his journey, learning, making mistakes, asking questions and discovering what he is capable of.
And perhaps this is what mentorship is really about.

It is not about creating people who follow your footsteps.
It is about helping them build their own path.
A surgeon can operate on hundreds of patients.

A teacher can teach thousands of students.
But when you help develop someone who eventually teaches others, the impact continues long after you are gone.
Plant a tree under whose shade you may never sit.
That, to me, is the real meaning of education, mentorship and legacy.

The greatest satisfaction is not being called a good surgeon or a good teacher.
It is seeing someone you once taught become better than you, and knowing that you played a small part in that journey.

2014: A belief.
2026: A journey.
Tomorrow: Their turn to create an impact.

🌱 Teach. Mentor. Empower. Give others the opportunity to grow.
Because success is not only about how far you go.
It is also about how many people you help move forward.

(Whole grains)

🦴 THE FOODS THAT MAY BE MAKING YOUR JOINT PAIN WORSE

If you have osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, your diet may influence inflammation, body weight and metabolic health. But there is no single food that “destroys” your joints.

Here are the dietary habits worth paying attention to 👇

❌ 1. Sugary drinks & excess added sugar
Soft drinks, sweetened juices, desserts and highly processed foods can promote weight gain and metabolic dysfunction, which may worsen the inflammatory environment around arthritis.

🌾 2. Highly refined carbohydrates
White bread, refined flour, pastries and many ultra-processed snacks can contribute to excess calorie intake and poor metabolic health.

🍟 3. Ultra-processed & fried foods
Foods high in saturated fat, refined carbohydrates and excessive calories are best limited as part of an arthritis-friendly diet.

🥓 4. Processed meats
Sausages, processed burgers and other heavily processed meats are not ideal choices when building a long-term anti-inflammatory eating pattern.

🍺 5. Excess alcohol
Alcohol can contribute to inflammation, weight gain and metabolic problems. It may also be particularly relevant in people with gout.

⚠️ What about gluten, dairy, eggs or corn?

These foods are not universally harmful for people with arthritis. Some individuals may have specific allergies, intolerances or autoimmune conditions where avoiding particular foods is appropriate. Routine elimination of all these foods is not supported for everyone with rheumatoid or osteoarthritis.

🥗 So what should you eat?

Think Mediterranean-style:

✅ Vegetables & fruits
✅ Whole grains in appropriate portions
✅ Fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids
✅ Nuts & seeds
✅ Legumes
✅ Olive oil and other healthier unsaturated fats
✅ Adequate protein
✅ Plenty of minimally processed foods

🏃‍♂️ And don't forget movement!

For osteoarthritis, staying active is extremely important. Appropriate exercise can improve muscle strength, joint function and pain. Resting the joint completely is usually not the answer.

💡 Bottom line:
You don't need a miracle diet or a “forbidden food” list.

Reduce ultra-processed foods, added sugar and excess calories. Eat more whole foods, maintain a healthy weight and keep moving.

And if you have persistent joint pain, swelling or morning stiffness, get the diagnosis right first. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are different diseases and need different management.

🦴 Your joints don't just need less pain. They need better overall health.

From a Small Village to Becoming a Consultant

Some journeys are not measured in kilometres. They are measured in courage, sacrifice, perseverance and the refusal to give up.

Dr. Afnan came to SIUT from a small village in Waziristan, a region that has witnessed years of hardship and the devastating impact of terrorism. He arrived with a dream: to become a urologist and to train in one of the best urology residency programs.

The journey was not easy.

There were difficult days, long hours, demanding training and, of course, plenty of scolding from his supervisor. 😄

He would often complain:
“Sir, why do you always scold me? Why do you keep telling me to study?”

Today, after successfully clearing his FCPS and becoming a Consultant Urologist, I think he has his answer.
After the result, he said something that I will always remember:
“Sir, you were right. Education can change everything.”

That sentence made all those difficult conversations worthwhile.

As a supervisor, there are few moments more rewarding than watching a resident whom you have trained cross the finish line and become a colleague.

Dr. Afnan's story is a reminder that your starting point does not determine your destination.
You may come from a small village.
You may face circumstances beyond your control.
You may struggle.
You may even doubt yourself.

But if you keep learning, keep working and don't give up, the possibilities are endless.

Today, I am not just proud of Dr. Afnan as a successful FCPS graduate.
I am proud of the journey he made.

From a young doctor with a dream to a Consultant Urologist.

And perhaps the greatest reward for a teacher is seeing a student eventually realize:
“Education really can change all.”

Congratulations, Dr. Afnan.
Your journey has only just begun. 🌱

✅ Strength / Resistance Exercise
✅ باقاعدہ طبی follow-up

— Prof. Harris Hassan Qureshi

🚨 YOU LOST THE WEIGHT… THEN YOU STOPPED OZEMPIC. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

This is the question many people ask after achieving impressive results with GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic (semaglutide).

The answer may surprise you.

💉 When the medication stops, its effects gradually fade.

🔴 1. HUNGER CAN COME BACK
The appetite-suppressing effect decreases. Food may become more tempting, portions may increase, and the feeling of fullness may not be the same.

⚖️ 2. WEIGHT CAN COME BACK
This is one of the most important findings from clinical research.

In the STEP 1 extension study, people who stopped semaglutide regained approximately two-thirds of the weight they had previously lost within one year.

🩸 3. BLOOD SUGAR MAY RISE
For people taking GLP-1 medication for diabetes, stopping treatment can allow glucose levels to rise again.

🧠 4. THIS IS NOT “LACK OF WILLPOWER”
Weight regulation is biologically complex. Appetite hormones, energy expenditure and the body's response to weight loss all influence what happens after treatment.

💪 5. THE EXIT PLAN MATTERS
If treatment is going to be stopped, the focus should shift toward:

✅ Adequate protein
✅ Resistance/strength training
✅ Regular physical activity
✅ Sustainable nutrition
✅ Sleep and lifestyle habits
✅ Monitoring weight and metabolic parameters
✅ Medical follow-up

THE BIG MESSAGE

Ozempic is not a magic injection.
And stopping it is not simply a matter of “finishing the course.”

For many patients, GLP-1 therapy is part of long-term disease management, not a short-term quick fix.

If you're taking Ozempic or another GLP-1 medication, don't stop it on your own. Discuss a long-term plan with your doctor.

The goal isn't simply to lose weight.
The goal is to build a healthier body that you can maintain.

14/09/2026

• Steroid hormones
• Bile acids

❤️ Heart attack
🧠 Ischemic stroke

• Liver enzymes
• Diabetes risk
• Muscle symptoms

🫀 STATINS FOR YEARS: WHAT REALLY HAPPENS TO YOUR BODY?

A recent video discussing long-term statin use raises an important question:

Are statins simply lowering cholesterol, or are they affecting other pathways in our body too?

Here are 5 things worth knowing 👇

🔹 1. Statins inhibit cholesterol synthesis
They block HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme in the cholesterol synthesis pathway.

🔹 2. The same pathway is involved in CoQ10 production
Statins can reduce circulating CoQ10 levels. Some patients report muscle pain, weakness or fatigue while taking statins.

🔹 3. Cholesterol is NOT simply “bad”
Cholesterol is essential for cell membranes, steroid hormones, bile acids and vitamin D synthesis.

But that does not mean elevated LDL cholesterol is harmless.

🔹 4. LDL-C remains an important cardiovascular risk factor
For people who have a clear indication for statin therapy, lowering LDL can substantially reduce the risk of heart attack and ischemic stroke.

🔹 5. Individual risk matters
The right question is not:

❌ “Are statins good or bad?”

The better question is:

✅ “Does this patient benefit enough from statin therapy to justify treatment, and are there adverse effects that need to be addressed?”

💡 And what about CoQ10?

CoQ10 supplementation may help some patients with statin-associated muscle symptoms, but it is not something every person taking a statin automatically needs.

📌 Bottom line:
Don't stop a prescribed statin because of a social-media video.

Instead, discuss your LDL-C, overall cardiovascular risk, indication for treatment, liver enzymes, diabetes risk and any muscle symptoms with your physician.

Good medicine is not about fearing cholesterol or fearing statins.
It is about understanding risk and making an individualized decision.

🫀 Know your numbers. Understand your risk. Treat the patient, not just the cholesterol value.

Books teach knowledge. Workshops teach hands.
You can read every textbook on a procedure and still not be ready to perform it. Surgery isn't just what you know — it's what your hands have learned to do under pressure, with real tissue, real anatomy, real stakes.
That's the gap hands-on training workshops close. They give trainees the chance to:
🔹 Practice technique on simulators and models before ever touching a patient
🔹 Build muscle memory that no textbook diagram can teach
🔹 Learn to handle the unexpected — bleeding, anatomical variation, equipment issues — in a safe environment
🔹 Receive real-time feedback from experienced surgeons watching their hands, not just their answers
Medicine gives us the "why." Workshops give us the "how."
Investing in structured, hands-on surgical education isn't optional — it's how we protect patients and build the next generation of confident, competent surgeons.

Resistance training /

🩸 7 SIMPLE WAYS TO HELP LOWER BLOOD SUGAR

High blood sugar is not only about how much sugar you eat. Your muscles, liver, meal timing, physical activity and insulin sensitivity all play important roles.

Here are 7 practical strategies that can help improve glucose control:

1️⃣ MOVE AFTER MEALS 🚶‍♂️
A 10–20 minute walk after eating can reduce the post-meal rise in blood glucose. Even better, make regular exercise part of your routine.

2️⃣ BUILD MUSCLE 💪
Muscles are an important place for glucose disposal. Resistance training helps increase muscle mass and improves insulin sensitivity.

3️⃣ CHANGE THE ORDER OF YOUR FOOD 🍽️
Try eating vegetables and protein first, followed by carbohydrates. This may reduce the glucose spike compared with eating carbohydrates first.

4️⃣ AVOID PROLONGED SITTING 🪑
Sitting for long periods can worsen insulin sensitivity. Get up every 30–60 minutes, walk around, or do some simple movement.

5️⃣ BE CAREFUL WITH LATE-NIGHT SNACKING 🌙
For many people, large meals and frequent carbohydrate-rich snacks late at night can make glucose control more difficult.

6️⃣ LIMIT SUGARS AND REFINED CARBOHYDRATES 🍰🥤
Soft drinks, sweets, refined flour, desserts and highly processed carbohydrates can cause significant glucose elevations. Choose vegetables, legumes, whole grains and other high-fibre foods more often.

7️⃣ FOCUS ON THE BIG PICTURE ❤️
Healthy weight, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, a balanced diet and appropriate medical treatment all work together.

⚠️ One important point:
Do not stop or replace diabetes medication with supplements such as berberine without discussing it with your doctor. Diabetes treatment should be individualized, and supplements are not automatically safer than prescribed medicines.

Small changes, done consistently, can make a big difference.

🩺 Monitor. Move. Eat wisely. Stay consistent.

🔥 BURN THE SHIPS

In 1519, Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés arrived on the shores of Mexico.

Legend says he ordered his men to burn the ships.

The message was simple:

There is no going back.

Whether the historical detail is literal or embellished, the lesson remains powerful.

Sometimes, success requires more than a goal.

It requires commitment.

🔥 Stop keeping an easy escape route.
🔥 Stop waiting for the “perfect” time.
🔥 Stop telling yourself, “I can always quit.”
🔥 Decide what matters, then move forward.

The surgeon who keeps refining a difficult skill.
The resident who keeps learning after failure.
The researcher who continues after rejection.
The leader who stays the course when things become difficult.

They have something in common:

They keep moving forward.

But remember, “burning the ships” does not mean being reckless.

It means removing the distractions that keep you from giving your best effort.

Sometimes the biggest obstacle isn't failure.

It's knowing you can always turn back.

🔥 Choose the goal.
🔥 Commit to the journey.
🔥 Burn the excuses.
🔥 Move forward.

No retreat. No excuses. Just progress.
