“Psychiatrist ke paas jana hai ya psychologist ke?”

You are not expected to know that before contacting us.

Most people begin by telling us what has changed: panic attacks that are becoming difficult to manage, a child struggling at school, an older parent becoming forgetful or suspicious, or a family member whose sleep and behaviour have suddenly changed.

That information helps us understand the nature of the enquiry and guide you towards a relevant starting point. Depending on the concern, this may be a psychiatric consultation, therapy, occupational therapy, psychological assessment or another clinical service.

You do not need a diagnosis or the name of a test before making the first call.

“The psychologist recommended a WISC assessment. Does that mean something is wrong with my child?”

This is a common concern among parents, particularly when an assessment is recommended because a child is struggling at school.

The WISC is not a school examination and does not have a pass or fail result. It helps a psychologist examine different areas of a child’s cognitive functioning and identify patterns of relative strength and difficulty.

Parents should not coach children for the assessment or make them feel that they need to achieve a particular score. A good night’s sleep, a comfortable explanation and an ordinary routine are usually more helpful than practice.

Most importantly, the results should not be treated as a complete description of the child. They must be interpreted alongside the reason for referral, developmental and educational history, behavioural observations and any other relevant findings.

Tayyaba joined IQ’s Neurodevelopmental Clinical Practicum to understand what clinical work feels like beyond the classroom.

One client interaction stayed with her. A non-verbal client’s gestures, expressions, and emotional responses helped her understand that communication can happen without words.

Through supervised clinical exposure at IQ, she learned to observe first, understand carefully, and respond with respect.

For Omer, what stood out about his MHC Level 1 Clinical Practicum experience at IQ was transitioning from theoretical classroom learning to hands-on, practical implementation with direct clinical exposure.
Coming from IPP at Bahria University, he highlighted how the program allowed him to actively apply concepts from his textbooks and university notes directly into real-world clinical situations. He strongly recommends the experience to anyone seeking thorough, practical training on their journey to becoming a clinical psychologist.
