Statin use is associated with slower cognitive decline in some patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), particularly in women with elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C).

In a registry-based analysis of more than 1200 patients with AD or mixed AD (mixed AD and vascular dementia), women with elevated LDL-C who were taking statins experienced a slower rate of decline on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) compared with women not taking statins (beta coefficient, 1.2 points per year). The association was not statistically significant in men with elevated LDL-C, and no s*x differences were observed among patients with lower LDL-C levels.

The findings suggest that s*x and LDL-C levels may influence the relationship between statin use and cognitive decline, but the investigators cautioned that the results are preliminary. https://mdsc.pe/3RuufmD

Nationally representative data applying the PREVENT-ASCVD risk equations recommended by the 2026 guideline indicate that approximately one-quarter of US adults aged 40-79 years are reclassified to different risk categories compared with the prior pooled cohort equations ( ).

Most were reclassified downward, particularly males, non-Hispanic Black individuals, and current smokers; females and patients with were more frequently moved to higher risk groups.

Despite these shifts, therapy recommendations remained unchanged, highlighting the potential for more personalized risk stratification, including use of risk enhancers or coronary artery calcium scoring.
