Fasting Sugar Test vs. HbA1c: Which is Better for Diagnosing Diabetes?
Many people rely strictly on the fasting sugar test (nahara test), but it can sometimes be misleading. A fasting test only shows your blood sugar level at that specific moment. If it comes back normal but you are still experiencing symptoms, you might be getting a false sense of security.
Doctors and specialists highly recommend the HbA1c test because it provides an accurate average of your blood sugar over the last 2 to 3 months.
Important Exceptions: The HbA1c test is NOT recommended for everyone. Your doctor will avoid this test if you:
Are pregnant
Have a history of anemia or recent severe blood loss
Have a Vitamin B12 deficiency
Are a kidney patient (especially those with high creatinine or on dialysis)
