🔍 Gluten Detective | Episode 2

Is Lay’s Wavy Yogurt & Herb Gluten-Free? 🥔

✅ Verdict: Gluten-Free by Ingredients

We checked the ingredient list carefully. The product does not list wheat, barley, rye, malt extract, or other obvious gluten-containing ingredients. The label also states E635 (from plant source) and identifies milk as an allergen.

⚠️ Important: This product does not appear to carry a certified gluten-free claim. If your child has celiac disease, always prefer products with a reliable gluten-free certification and consider the risk of cross-contact during manufacturing.

📖 Dietitian's Tip:
Don't judge a food by its front packaging. Turn the pack around, read the ingredients, and check the allergen statement.

🌱 Early Introduction, Stronger Protection Against Food Allergies

Did you know that introducing common allergenic foods at the right time can help reduce the risk of food allergies in children?

Current international guidelines recommend introducing common allergenic foods around 6 months of age (not before 4 months), once your baby shows developmental readiness, while continuing breastfeeding whenever possible.

🥚🥜🐟 Common allergens such as egg, peanut, wheat, fish, dairy, soy, and tree nuts should be introduced one at a time and then included regularly in the diet to help maintain tolerance.

For infants with severe eczema or existing food allergies, consult your pediatrician or pediatric dietitian before introducing allergenic foods.

✨ Key Takeaway:
Early, safe, and regular introduction of allergenic foods is one of the most effective evidence-based strategies for reducing the risk of food allergies in children.

At CHANS (Child Health and Nutrition Solutions), we are committed to empowering parents and healthcare professionals with evidence-based nutrition guidance for healthier children and brighter futures.

Grateful to speak at the 6th All Pakistan Nutritionist Convention 2025 on a topic close to my heart:
“Fixing the Future: Combating Malnutrition, Improving School Nutrition & Preventing NCDs in Children.”

Key points from my talk:

Pakistan’s nutrition crisis is no longer just undernutrition—it's hidden hunger, obesity, and early-onset NCDs in children.

There’s a dangerous disconnect between policy and plate—our frameworks exist, but implementation lags.

School environments are contributing to poor diets and obesity: we need nutrition education, canteen reform, and BMI tracking.

NCDs in children like Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and fatty liver disease are on the rise—and it’s not genetics, it’s food.

Solutions must be multi-tiered:

Place pediatric nutritionists in hospitals, BHUs, and schools

Ban junk food in school canteens

Train LHWs and teachers on child nutrition and early prevention

Engage parents and youth via media and school sessions

The future of Pakistan is being shaped on the plates of our children. Let’s act now to nourish it.

(Celiac Disease)
(Management)

👶 Watch for these warning signs: ✅ Persistent diarrhea or constipation ✅ Bloated tummy ✅ Poor weight gain or weight loss ✅ Short stature ✅ Fatigue ✅ Iron deficiency anemia

💚 The good news? With early diagnosis and a strict gluten-free diet, children with celiac disease can grow, thrive, and live healthy lives.

🇵🇰 Only 4 out of every 100 Pakistani children aged 6–23 months receive the nutrition they need for healthy growth.

According to the Pakistan National Nutrition Survey (NNS 2018), most young children are not getting enough dietary diversity, protein, fruits, vegetables, and other essential nutrients during the most critical period of development.

The consequences can be lifelong: 📉 Stunting 🧠 Reduced brain development 🛡️ Weak immunity 📚 Poor learning outcomes

The good news? Small daily changes can make a big difference.

✅ Add eggs, daal, milk, yogurt, fruits, and vegetables to your child's diet whenever possible. ✅ Focus on nutrition quality, not just filling the stomach. ✅ Invest in the first 1,000 days of life—the foundation for a healthier future.

At CHANS (Child Health and Nutrition Solutions), we are committed to promoting evidence-based nutrition education, growth monitoring, and healthy feeding practices to help every child reach their full potential.

Together, we can build a healthier, stronger Pakistan—one child at a time. 💙💚

🚨 Why should Pakistani babies get added sugar when healthier formulations are possible?

As pediatric nutrition professionals, we believe every child deserves the highest standard of nutrition—regardless of where they are born.

A review of Cerelac products available in Pakistan shows the presence of added sugar, while international investigations have reported that similar products sold in some high-income countries are formulated without added sugar.

📌 The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends: ❌ No added sugar for children under 2 years of age.

Early exposure to added sugar may: 🔸 Shape a lifelong preference for sweet foods. 🔸 Reduce acceptance of natural, wholesome foods. 🔸 Increase the risk of poor dietary habits later in life.

The issue is not whether Cerelac contains iron and vitamins—it does. The real question is:

If added sugar is unnecessary for infant nutrition, why should it be part of baby foods?

At CHANS (Child Health and Nutrition Solutions), we advocate for: ✅ Evidence-based infant feeding. ✅ Transparent food labeling. ✅ Equitable nutrition standards for all children. ✅ Real, minimally processed complementary foods whenever possible.

Parents deserve clear information. Children deserve better choices.

Read the label. Ask questions. Choose wisely.

Because a baby's first foods should build healthy habits—not a preference for sweetness.

💬 What are your thoughts? Should baby foods marketed in Pakistan be free from added sugar?
