✅ Why Your Knee Locks Suddenly
▪️A knee that suddenly locks or gets stuck is often caused by a bucket-handle meniscus tear. In this injury, a torn piece of cartilage flips into the joint, preventing the knee from moving normally. It is a common sports injury but can also occur during everyday twisting movements.
🟣 What is happening?
➟ The meniscus tears and a fragment becomes displaced inside the knee.
➟ The torn tissue blocks normal movement, causing the knee to “lock.”
➟ This results in pain, swelling, and difficulty bending or straightening the knee.
🟣 Common symptoms
➟ Sudden locking or inability to fully straighten the knee
➟ Sharp pain after twisting the knee
➟ Swelling within a few hours
➟ Clicking, catching, or popping sensation
➟ Difficulty walking or bearing weight
🟣 Common causes
➟ Twisting while the foot is planted
➟ Sports such as football, basketball, or skiing
➟ Squatting or lifting heavy objects
➟ Age-related degeneration of the meniscus
🟣 Who is at risk?
➟ Athletes involved in pivoting sports
➟ People performing repetitive kneeling or squatting
➟ Older adults with degenerative cartilage changes
➟ Anyone sustaining a sudden twisting knee injury
🟣 Diagnosis
➟ Clinical examination by a healthcare professional
➟ MRI scan to confirm the meniscus tear
➟ X-ray to exclude fractures or arthritis if required
🟣 Treatment
➟ Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE)
➟ Pain-relieving or anti-inflammatory medication if appropriate
➟ Physiotherapy to restore strength and movement
➟ Arthroscopic surgery if the knee remains locked or the tear is severe
🚨 Seek urgent medical attention if:
➟ The knee cannot be straightened at all
➟ You are unable to bear weight
➟ There is severe swelling after injury
➟ The knee feels unstable or repeatedly locks
✅ Prevention
➟ Strengthen the muscles around the knee
➟ Warm up before sports and exercise
➟ Use proper pivoting and landing techniques
➟ Wear appropriate footwear during physical activity
