Many parents ask: “Why does autism happen?”
Two important areas to understand are Genetic Factors and Brain Development.
1. Genetic Factors (Family History / Inherited Factors)
Genetics means traits passed from parents or family members.
✅ Sometimes autism can be linked to family history.
✅ If a sibling or close family member has autism or developmental delays, the chance may be higher.
✅ This does not mean parents caused it — it simply means genes can play a role.
Simple example:
Just like children can inherit eye color or height, some brain-development differences can also be inherited.
2. Brain Development in Autism
Autism is related to how a child’s brain develops and processes information.
🧠 In autistic children, the brain may:
• process sounds, touch, or visual information differently
• respond differently to social interaction and communication
• develop unique strengths and challenges
This is why some children may:
• have delayed speech
• avoid eye contact
• show repetitive behaviors (stimming)
• prefer routines
Important message for parents:
Autism is not an illness caused by bad parenting.
It is a neurodevelopmental difference, and with early support (ABA, Speech, OT) children can make wonderful progress. 💙
Early understanding leads to early support.
