Hand rubbing is a method of cleaning hands using an alcohol-based solution to remove germs and prevent infection transmission. It is recommended by the World Health Organization for routine hand hygiene in healthcare settings when hands are not visibly soiled.

The procedure involves applying a sufficient amount of hand rub to cover all surfaces of the hands, followed by systematic rubbing of palms, back of hands, between fingers, thumbs, fingertips, and nails. The process should be continued for 20–30 seconds until the hands are completely dry.

Hand rubbing is fast, effective, and reduces microbial load significantly. It is preferred over handwashing in most clinical situations due to its convenience and efficiency, except when hands are visibly dirty or contaminated with body fluids, where soap and water must be used.
