Everyone knows the current regime in Pakistan lacks a genuine public mandate. PM Shehbaz Sharif came through the Form-47 controversy and struggles to exercise authority even within his own country so how can such a government claim to mediate conflicts between the US and Iran?
If anything, it looks like the US wants a face-saving exit as this war backfires. Pakistan’s current leadership, lacking public support, appears willing to echo Washington’s line to stay in power. That may also explain why Trump reposted Shehbaz’s tweet it signals more desperation than diplomacy.
We’ve seen this before: fighting America’s war in Afghanistan, and now “pursuing dialogue” with Iran at Washington’s urging. When a government lacks a mandate from its own people, compromises with foreign powers become easier.
In short Pakistani regime to US : Use us as you want but we need to stay in power 🤷
So the real question is: what exactly are we celebrating?
