Every day, I met patients who had recently undergone surgery. As part of the nutrition assessment, I asked a simple question:
"Has your doctor advised you about any dietary restrictions or recommendations after the surgery?"
The patient smiled and replied, "No."
That moment reminded me of something we often overlook in healthcare—successful treatment doesn't end in the operating room.
Surgery may address the disease, but nutrition plays a vital role in recovery. What a patient eats after surgery can influence wound healing, digestion, immunity, medication tolerance, and even the prevention of future complications.
This isn't about pointing fingers or placing blame. Doctors, surgeons, nurses, and dietitians all have different but equally important roles in patient care. Healthcare works best when it is multidisciplinary.
As dietitians, we bridge the gap between treatment and recovery. We translate medical care into practical dietary guidance that patients can follow in their daily lives.
Sometimes, a patient doesn't need another prescription—they need to know:
What foods are safe to eat.
What foods should be limited or avoided.
How much fluid they should consume.
How to meet their nutritional needs during recovery.
Nutrition is not an afterthought. It is an essential part of healing.
Let's continue advocating for collaborative healthcare, where every patient receives not only the treatment they need but also the nutritional support they deserve.

Zinc Deficiency: A Small Nutrient with a Big Impact

Zinc is an essential mineral that plays a vital role in supporting the immune system, wound healing, growth and development, DNA synthesis, and maintaining a healthy sense of taste and smell. Despite its importance, zinc deficiency is often overlooked and can affect people of all ages.

Common signs of zinc deficiency may include:
• Frequent infections
• Slow wound healing
• Hair loss
• Reduced appetite
• Poor growth in children
• Changes in taste or smell

A balanced diet that includes lean meat, poultry, seafood, dairy products, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and fortified cereals can help meet your daily zinc requirements.

In this infographic, I've summarized the key facts about zinc deficiency, including its functions, daily requirements, rich food sources, and practical dietary recommendations.

Good nutrition is one of the most effective ways to prevent micronutrient deficiencies and promote long-term health.

Obesity isn’t laziness. It’s biology.

Your fat cells, hormones, gut bacteria, sleep, stress, and genetics all decide where weight settles.
"Eat less" ignores that your body fights to regain weight. That’s why 80% of diets fail.

It’s a medical disease, not a moral one.
And it increases risk for diabetes, heart disease, and 13 cancers.

Solution ≠ shame.
Solution = protein, sleep, movement, stress control + medical help if needed.

You’re not weak. You’re human.

Diabetes is a chronic condition, not a personal failure.

1 in 4 adults in Pakistan lives with diabetes, and nearly half remain undiagnosed. The complications — nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy, and diabetic foot — are preventable with early detection and consistent management.
