A recent retrospective study investigated the prognostic and predictive significance of complete blood count-derived markers in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer treated with targeted biological agents.
Among 342 patients (369 treatment observations), lower hemoglobin levels and a lower lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) were independently associated with shorter overall survival. In contrast, NLR and PLR did not retain independent prognostic significance, and none of the evaluated inflammatory markers were associated with progression-free survival.
The authors conclude that these readily available blood-based markers may have prognostic value, while their role in predicting response or selecting a specific chemotherapy regimen or biologic agent remains uncertain.
