Have you had a look at the programme yet? 👀

With just a few weeks to go until the PULPIT Final Conference, this is a good moment to take another look at what we have prepared for 29–30 October 2026.

Two days of conversations, research, international experiences, patient stories, workshops and shared reflection on one central question:

How can we make patient and public involvement in healthcare education more meaningful?

From the PULPIT project itself to international best practices and future directions, the programme brings together different perspectives and creates space for discussion, not just presentations.

⏳ ONE MONTH TO GO!

We talk a lot about patient-centred healthcare. But are patients and the public meaningfully involved in educating future healthcare professionals?

On 29–30 October 2026, join us for the PULPIT Final Conference: The Missing Voices in Healthcare Education!

Over two days, we'll bring together patients, educators, students, healthcare professionals and researchers to explore how meaningful Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) can transform interprofessional healthcare education.

Through shared experiences, research findings and lessons learned throughout the PULPIT project, we'll explore what meaningful involvement looks like in practice, the challenges that remain and how we can move forward together.

💬 Because patients have more to contribute to healthcare education than their stories. They have a role in shaping it.

🎥 How can a personal story become a tool for education, advocacy and change?

Join us for the PULPIT pre-conference Digital Storytelling Workshop, a hands-on train-the-trainer event led by Prof. Dr. Idevania Costa from Lakehead University, Canada, with May Remenda, also from Lakehead University, contributing to the practical component.

Under the title “Digital Storytelling Workshop: A Tool for Amplifying the Voices of Invisible Minorities and Promoting Knowledge Mobilization,” this interactive session will explore how digital storytelling can help bring lived experiences to the forefront, amplify underrepresented voices and support knowledge mobilization.

Prof. Dr. Idevania Costa’s research has specifically explored digital storytelling as a participatory approach to education, health promotion, inclusivity and the sharing of patient experiences.

The workshop combines theory and practice:

💡 Part 1 — Understanding Digital Storytelling
A 45-minute introduction to its principles, purpose and potential.

🎬 Part 2 — From Story to Digital Story
A 45-minute practical session exploring how storytelling videos are developed and created, with the contribution of May Remenda, a Social Worker and Senior Research Assistant with experience in digital storytelling and knowledge mobilization.

Whether you are a healthcare professional, educator, student or patient organisation representative, this workshop will provide practical insights that you can take forward into your own work and communities.

📢 New publication from the PULPIT consortium!

We are delighted to share our latest research, “The Gordian Knot That Is Patient and Public Involvement in Interprofessional Education,” now published in Perspectives on Medical Education.

How can we move from recognising the value of Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in Interprofessional Education (IPE) to meaningfully embedding it in healthcare education?

To explore this question, the PULPIT consortium conducted 15 focus groups across Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal and Slovenia, bringing together 78 participants: 27 students, 27 academic staff members and 24 patient representatives.

The findings show both the potential and the complexity of bringing PPI and IPE together. Participants highlighted how involving patients can help bridge theory and practice, strengthen person-centred communication and interprofessional collaboration, and reduce perceived hierarchies. At the same time, meaningful implementation requires institutional support and careful attention to organisation, facilitation, preparation and reciprocity.

One of the paper’s central messages is particularly relevant to PULPIT: patients can serve as a unifying lens for interprofessional learning, grounding education in the realities and needs of the people healthcare ultimately exists to serve.

The challenge now is to move beyond rhetorical support for patient involvement and create the conditions for it to become a meaningful and sustainable part of healthcare education.

👏 Congratulations to all the authors, consortium partners and participants who contributed to this work!

Sometimes inspiration comes from the most direct moments of learning 💬💙

Lucija Gosak is inspired by seeing real patients actively shape how students understand care: bringing authenticity, empathy, and lived experience into the learning process 🎓🤝

These moments of connection are at the core of PULPIT, reminding us why learning with people makes all the difference 🌍✨

🎉 The PULPIT pilot has been successfully implemented at the University of Minho!

Throughout the programme, students, Experts by Experience (EBEs) and facilitators came together to explore the impact of patient partnership in healthcare education.

By fostering dialogue, critical reflection and interprofessional collaboration, the pilot highlighted the value of learning directly from people with lived experience and reinforced the importance of person-centred education.

One particularly inspiring outcome came from one of the participating Experts by Experience, who was motivated by the programme to begin sharing their personal healthcare journey on social media, helping to raise awareness and amplify the patient voice beyond the classroom.

A heartfelt thank you to all participants for making this pilot such a meaningful and inspiring experience.

Together, we're building the future of healthcare education—one where patients are true partners in learning.

Education becomes transformative when power is shared 💬🤝

As an associate professor and dean at the University of Maribor, Mateja Lorber is inspired by how PULPIT demonstrates that equity and empathy are not abstract ideals, but skills that can be learned—by working with patients as partners 🎓💙

By redistributing power and centring lived experience, PULPIT is reshaping what healthcare education can and should be 🌍✨
