Our home in Portugal is 30 hectares of some of the most beautiful and empty land in Europe. We live with a herd of 9 horses, and are guided by nature in how we care for them, ourselves, our land. We live 'over the edge' always expanding our horizons, outgrowing ourselves and our ideas on a daily basis, exploring, listening, living fully. But we are also practical people, with practical skills and

this is a place you can learn practical stuff to use in your daily life. If you are interested in horses and their native needs, essential oils and herbs, or knowing yourself more deeply, come and visit.

This is what goes into every bottle in our shop.

Hands packing the copper still. The hydrosol collecting slowly, drop by drop. A whole tray of freshly harvested Rosmaninho lavender, sorted in the sunshine before it goes in.

No shortcuts.

No machines.

No outsourcing.

Just us, the plants from our land, our still, and a process that has not changed since we started doing this here in Alentejo.

Every essential oil and hydrosol we sell is made exactly like this, slowly, carefully, from wild plants we harvest ourselves and distil using spring water from our own land.

At this time of year the grasses are all browned out, and the bright colours of lavender and friends are long gone.

You might think it a bit dreary but it’s really not, because the deep green trees and their friendly shadows dance across the hills, and gather in the valleys humming quietly. It seems to me they vibrate more musically year on year.

When we first moved here 11 years ago, walking through the woodlands could be a sad business some times, so many sick and dying trees.
But nowadays after 11 years of loving care, it hums and buzzes with new growth and a feeling of satisfaction; as I walk through them today I am wrapped in a feeling of gratitude and awe at the power of nature.

And then I come across the horses standing on a small ridge, in a clearing between the trees where the breeze blows, and stand with them a while breathing peace. Such a simple life, full of simple joys.

We’ll be open for guests again in Mid September if you want to experience it for yourself. Meanwhile a few random summer pics 🤗

Here it is, the time of ripening, August, the month where everything pauses for a moment. When I walk through the woods everything is still, the birds are quiet now their nests are empty, no insects buzz, the trees hold themselves as if enchanted. It is exquisite this feeling, to stand there in that silence, suspended in time.

After the high energy buzz of spring with all its growth and birth and excitement, this is the moment, to enjoy that which we have planted earlier as everything matures in its own time, fruits set, seeds ripen, we cannot hurry it all we can do is wait and see what the harvest will bring. So sit quietly for a moment in the shade in these hot days, then as the evenings bring a cooling breeze, watch the long evening light linger and fade.

Take it easy, be pleased with yourself and all that is given, enjoy!

Two of my favourite plants are flowering together on our hillside right now.

🪻The purple is Rosmaninho — Lavandula stoechas — our wild local lavender. She is nothing like the lavender you find in the shops. More pungent, more alive, more medicinally powerful. She opens your lungs, clears your sinuses, fights off bacteria and fungi, and somehow manages to be deeply relaxing at the same time. A bit of an overachiever, honestly. The bees absolutely love her and I completely understand why.

🌼The gold is helichrysum — perpétua in Portuguese, the everlasting flower. And she really does last. She is one of the most regenerative aromatics I know — brilliant for healing the skin, bruises, scars, inflammation, broken capillaries. She just quietly gets on with repairing things. There is something very reassuring about that.

Both grow wild here on our land. We harvest them by hand, taking only what they are offering, and distil them right here on the farm into essential oils and hydrosols that carry the whole energetic imprint of the plant and the place they came from.

I have been working with these plants for decades and they still surprise me.

Meet cistus. Or as it is known in Portugal, esteva.

It is a tall, sticky, wildly fragrant shrub that covers our hillsides and has been used as a herbal ally for centuries. One of the candidates, actually, for the biblical burning bush. There is something ancient and deeply grounding about this plant, you can feel it the moment you smell it.

Cistus moves into damaged land and helps repair it, returning it to fertility. That tells you something about its character. On the skin it does the same, brilliant for scars, rashes, blemishes, and itching. Emotionally it is restorative and gentle, helping to release old hurts and anxiety, including the kind that has been carried through generations.

Our Cistus Hydrosol is distilled slowly and gently right here on the farm, using spring water from our own land, water that has had no chemical fertiliser on it in decades. Unlike most hydrosols you will find commercially, ours is not a by-product of essential oil production. It is the main event. We distil for the water, which means the whole energetic imprint of the plant stays intact in every bottle.

You can use it as a face toner, an after-shower rinse, a bath soak, a room spray, or a skin soother. Add it to creams, soaps, or cooking.

It is one of the most versatile and forgiving things we make. And right now the cistus is flowering all over our hills, which means the harvest and distillation season is here.

It started as a shoe deodoriser.

A cork disk in each shoe, a few drops of essential oil, and suddenly your shoes smell like sun-warmed herbs on a Portuguese hillside instead of… well, shoes. It worked so well that we started putting the disks everywhere else: in cupboards, in the car, in sock drawers, on bookshelves, next to the bed.

Now we make them properly.

The Alentejo Aroma Disk is a passive diffuser, no plug, no water, no batteries. Just natural cork cut from the trees on our land, and a blend of essential oils distilled from the aromatic plants that grow in their shadow. Lavender, cistus, helichrysum, eucalyptus, rosemary, juniper, lemon. The smell of these hills in a 5ml bottle.

A few drops on the cork. Place it where you want the scent. That is the whole thing.

It comes in a natural cotton bag with two cork disks and the oil blend. Refills are available separately when you run out, which you will.

The most affordable way to bring a little of this place home, or to give someone a small, considered gift that is genuinely unlike anything else.

MANY,MANY THANKS to all you lovely people who chose us as their holiday destination in the past year, and all of you who bought our products or joined our workshops. We couldn’t do this without you,

So I thought you might like to see where your money went...... Yes, we turned it into horse food! It’s all stacked safely in the hay barn after our annual delivery. And it’s better than Christmas for me! I can breathe deeply and know we have food security for another year.

But now, after all that sweat and dust getting it all put away it must be time for a swim in the lake, so refreshing on these hot June days. Anyone want to join us?
