Benzene - Industrial workers monitoring of benzene toxicants in air & suspicion of intoxication

Benzene, a volatile hydrocarbon compound, is one of the main components of different fuels,including gasoline. It has a major economic importance, being used for: the production of detergents, rubber, plastic, paints in the pharmaceutical industry; in the chemical industry; it is an excellent solvent for various substances like fats, rubbers, wax, resins, most of the organic substances, etc.; even some polymers are benzene soluble: unvulcanised rubber dissolved in benzene is the well known solution used for gluing rubber items; in the perfume industry; in the cigarette industry; in the fuel industry; also used in the drugs industry, for the production of aniline or phenol etc.
But benzene is an extremely toxic substance, and is harmful both for humans – it is the major cause for leukemia (Blood Cancer/Bone Marrow Cancer), and also for the environment.

Benzene is a highly toxic substance; it is one of the most toxic dissolvent’s. The benzene vapors are easily absorbed through the lungs, and in contact with the skin, the liquid benzene can also enter the body. The benzene affects mostly the neural system and the blood (especially the spinal cord that regenerates the blood cells).

Quantiferon TB Gold Test - An indicator for immune reaction with mycobacteria

Quantiferon TB Gold (QFT-G) Test detects the release of interferon-gamma in fresh heparinized whole blood from sensitized persons when it is incubated with mixtures of synthetic peptides representing two proteins present in M. tuberculosis: early secretory antigenic target-6 (ESAT-6) and culture filtrate protein-10 (CFP- 10). These antigens impart greater specificity than is possible with tests using purified protein derivative as the tuberculosis antigen. In direct comparisons, the sensitivity of QFT-G was statistically similar to that of the tuberculin skin test (TST) for detecting infection in persons with untreated culture-confirmed tuberculosis. The test detects M. tuberculosis, bovis, caprae or africanum. M. bovis-BGC for vaccination will not be detected. In case of an acute infection a positive test can be expected after 2-8 weeks.

Indication:
Targeted individuals were persons at increased risk for latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection (e.g., recent immigrants, injection-drug users, and residents and employees of prisons and jails), persons at low risk for latent M. tuberculosis infection but whose future activity might place them at increased risk (e.g., health-care workers and military personnel), persons who are not considered to have an increased probability of M.
tuberculosis infection but who require testing for other reasons
