For many patients, general anesthesia is more worrying than the operation itself. The good news is that modern anesthesia is very safe after a proper medical assessment.

Before every rhinoplasty or otoplasty, I review your medical history together with the anesthesiologist. In some cases, surgery may need to be postponed—for example, if you have an active infection, uncontrolled heart or lung disease, or a previous severe allergic reaction to anesthetic medications. That’s why it’s important to tell your doctor about all medications, allergies, and any past experience with anesthesia.

During the first 24 hours after surgery, it’s normal to feel tired or sleepy. I recommend resting, drinking plenty of fluids, taking your medications as prescribed, avoiding driving or alcohol, and having a responsible adult stay with you.

Good preparation before surgery—and careful recovery afterward—are just as important as the operation itself.
