”If I’m a narcissist in a divorce, here’s the playbook I run on you so I can keep my money and my comfort, and make you too scared to fight back.
First, I make sure you believe I know more than you. I throw around legal jargon, quote “my lawyer,” and speak with total confidence about what you’re “entitled” to, even when I am flat-out wrong. My absolute confidence makes you think I must know more than you.
Next, I tell you you’ll be left with nothing, that no judge will side with you, that you can’t afford a long fight, that you’ll look greedy if you ask for what the law actually allows. I mix in just enough truth (divorce is expensive, court is draining) that you start to think my version must be the realistic one.
Then, when I think I’ve got you worn down, I offer you a crap deal. I push mediation before you understand your leverage. I frame anything better as “unrealistic” or “selfish.” I count on you being so so eager for peace that you sign something you’ll regret five years from now, just to stop the threats and the tension.
This is not hypothetical. This is TEXTBOOK.
The way you protect yourself in a divorce like this is not by out-arguing him or waiting for him to admit he’s lying. It is by understanding where your leverage actually is: what matters to him (money, image, access), what the court will respond to (records, patterns, stability for your child), and what you are no longer willing to give away just because he says you have no choice.
If you are divorcing a controlling, narcissistic man and you feel that tug to settle for less just to make him stop, this is the warning you want before you agree to anything. So when he says, “Sign this or you’ll end up with nothing,” you are not negotiating from fear, you are negotiating from clarity and power.”
