Wayne Freeman Chong, PhD Experienced geropsychologist, awards-winning social scientist, knowledge entrepreneur, passionate educator and resilient informal caregiver.

I was plump growing up. People made fun of me. So I studied hard to prove them wrong—and I did. But I had few friends. That drive helped me succeed. But it came at a cost. In adulthood, I kept achieving, yet still felt unseen and disconnected. Everything shifted when I became my father’s caregiver. He was frail and cognitively declining. That experience changed me. I saw how caregiving begins long

before diagnosis—and how systems overlook both caregivers and dementia prevention. So I made it my mission. I completed a PhD in geropsychology. I went on to lead national research on caregiver wellbeing, supported ageing policy, taught psychology and integrated care, and advised organisations on dementia risk reduction and ageing workforce strategy. One of my publications was cited in a Singapore Parliamentary debate. Today, I speak, train, research and write to help caregivers become caregiving advocates. Because when caregivers have a voice and platform, they change not only their lives but also the lives of their care recipients and others around them. Want to work with me? Here’s how:

🔹 Corporate client or conference organiser
→ Book me to speak on “Future-Proof Your Workforce: Stop Losing Your Best People to Caregiving”, a keynote that helps you address talent attrition, measure employee motivation, and innovate work-life integration.

🔹 Health or social care organisation leader
→ Email me for a free consultation on how to better cater your programmes and services to older people and their family members.

🔹 Caregiver or family member of an older person
→ DM me for the latest issue of my newsletter, "Defy Dementia, Define Your Destiny." It’s specially written for you.

“Sell Dad’s flat to pay for treatment.”
“You can’t make that decision without me.”
“But Dad can’t understand or sign anymore.”
“So we’re stuck—arguing—while the clock keeps ticking.”

That’s what “too late” looks like.

This is why a lasting power of attorney ( ) matters.

But it’s only the first step.

Winnie Yeo and I sat down to learn about each other’s work for the first time.

We ended up planning a talk series for families.

Because even when paperwork is done, many families still feel lost, strained, and drained when caregiving begins.

We’re shaping a 2-part series:
1. LPA & decision-making (what it protects, what it doesn’t)
2. Caregiver preparedness (practical skills + realistic planning)

If your family already has an LPA, what’s the next step you wish you had taken earlier?

Dementia caregivers face strains everywhere - third and the first world.

The prevalence is one in three among those 85 years and above.

Wouldn't it be much better if we prevent dementia?

I once broke a jade bracelet in three.

Because I was a caregiver without a map.

Years ago, while caring for my grandmother to support my mum through depression, I lost my temper for a moment.
She was bruised. That bracelet shattered. And the regret stayed.

Caregiving also forced choices that never feel fair:
I’ve had to decide between my mother’s gynaecological cancer review and my wife’s ultrasound for our first child.

And later, caring for my dad meant tracking subtle changes — speech, “tip-of-the-tongue” moments, confusion with directions — while trying not to let my own anxiety take over.

These moments taught me something I now say plainly:

𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺.

Caregivers need guidance, boundaries, and support before things spiral.

That’s why I’m grateful to share the launch of the Institute of Mentors (SIMe) — a non-profit Company Limited by Guarantee focused on raising mentoring standards through ethics, supervision, and accountability.

SIMe is led by Mr Roland Ang.

I’m honoured to be one of the founding members, and I’ll be championing Family Development — especially Caregiving Mentorship.

We may not get winter in Singapore, but older adults here still deal with stiff joints, aches, and mobility challenges, especially in cooler, rainy months or heavily air-conditioned spaces. These simple neck, shoulder, hand, and leg exercises are a helpful reminder that gentle daily movement can make a real difference in strength, comfort, and independence.

The routines are easy to follow at home and perfect for supporting seniors who want to stay active and steady all year round.

Thanks to Dr. Mrigna Nagraj, Pankaj Mehrotra, and the 50 Plus Assist Pvt LTD. team for putting this together.
