How does scoliosis contributes to a constant one-sided knee pain?
If we look into the simple biomechanical chain of weight distributions:
Spinal/pelvic asymmetry → altered hip mechanics → different loading through each leg → increased stress on one knee -> hence expediting wear and tear
Of course, it can also be a localized knee related injury, hence during the examination, we normally assess at 3 levels:
1. Knee: swelling, ROM, joint-line tenderness, patellar tracking, ligament/meniscal signs.
2. Hip/pelvis: pelvic rotation/obliquity, hip ROM, glute strength, single-leg squat.
3. Spine: scoliosis pattern, lumbar/pelvic asymmetry and whether correcting the proximal mechanics changes the knee symptoms.
