👁 Seeing Clearly, Protecting Deeply: A Guide to Cataracts & Glaucoma
The learning continued at Filos Active Ageing Centre! Our Senior Glaucoma Specialist, Dr. Tan Yar Li, was on-site to shed light on two other common age-related eye conditions: Cataracts and Glaucoma.
Dr. Tan explained that while both can affect vision, they are very different conditions requiring different approaches.
Here’s a breakdown of the key insights she shared with the seniors:
🔍 CATARACTS: The Clouded Lens
➡️ What it is: A clouding of the eye’s natural lens, like a window that becomes frosted.
➡️ Common Symptoms: Blurred or cloudy vision, faded colours, glare from headlights or lamps, and frequent changes in eyeglass prescription.
➡️ The Good News: Cataract surgery (Phacoemulsification) is a highly successful and common procedure to restore clear vision by replacing the cloudy lens with intraocular lens.
🩺 GLAUCOMA: The Silent Thief of Sight
➡️ What it is: A group of diseases that damage the optic nerve. The crucial cable that sends images from your eye to your brain. This is often linked to high pressure inside the eye.
➡️ The Silent Danger: Like diabetic retinopathy, the most common form of glaucoma has no early symptoms. You could gradually lose your peripheral (side) vision without even realizing it, and the damage is irreversible.
➡️ The Key Defense: Early detection through regular, comprehensive eye exams is critical. Once detected, glaucoma can be managed with eye drops, laser treatment, or surgery to prevent further vision loss.
Our specialists are united in one mission: to protect your sight through expert care and proactive education, covering a full spectrum of eye conditions.
Don’t wait for your vision to blur. A simple screening can save your sight.
