SMALL THINGS BRAVE THINGS. this is the first time I'll be in the house on the anniversary of when I felt A's ending begin. a lightning jolt through my heart that brought me to my knees, a knowing across space. ⁣

four years on, this strange wild creature of grief surprises me with the shape of the ache that still comes and how much more deeply the generous love I received is made visible through distance. ⁣

amidst the dislocation and tenderness of grief, I'm reminded how simple are the things that help the most: music, company, food ♥️

SUN STANDS STILL. seasonal thresholds like today's summer solstice are invitations to pause, and a reminder for me that however my life might be, there are bigger cycles that continue to hold me in their ebb and flow. a pause to take in moments of wonder from the past few months and re-anchor in my one word intention for the rest of this year to come. wishing you blessings of warmth and comfort of the sun ☀️

FLOURISHING. it takes me an embarrassingly long time now to complete reading a book, compared to my voracious book-a-day when I was younger. 'languishing' by corey keyes affirmed what most of us already know we might need to engage with to make up a satisfying life: play, service, growth, connection, spirituality. ⁣

more importantly though, is its message (substantiated by research) that mental illness and mental health do not sit on the same continuum, but are dual continua. meaning we can have whatever challenging symptoms or experience we are dealing with, and still be able to have some degree of mental health by engaging in those five factors above as best we can or is available to us. ⁣

a reminder that as helpful as it might seem to dive down a blackhole of trauma books, inner child meditations and various wellness things to evoke release when we explore our relationship with ourself and our history, that the other things that support our flourishing - a meal with a good friend, helping a neighbour, learning a new skill just because- might be equally important to us feeling better, faster. ⁣

MAKING AND MENTAL HEALTH. when I find it hard to settle, or when things feel a little stuck, I find myself returning to making: flower arranging, baking, playing the uke, etc. and without needing to think too hard about it all, something gets unstuck, space opens up again inside. ⁣

hands-on creation brings present moment grounding through tactile sensation, repetitive motion becomes a moving meditation to quiet the mind and come back into flow. sometimes it becomes a way to express without words what is stirring on the inside. we have a primal need to create with our hands. a way to reconnect to our innate capacity for creation. each tangible thing we create lights up the rewards circuit of our brain- the feel good factor is real.⁣

there have been countless biohacking practices over the last decade, many of them involving deprivation, control, extremes. for me though, I love the idea that we can take the beauty path, the pleasure pathway to ease our hearts and minds with what we already have: our hands.

THE SUN AND VOICE RETURN. I've been in a wordless cocoon of sorts since Dec, where words have kept escaping me in an endless game of catch, unable to meaningfully contain what I feel. A me thing, a collective thing, a something in the stars thing? Maybe a bit of everything.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The body has a funny way of making a point, and it took the form of me completely losing my voice for five days, with it only returning more fully on the seventh day. Just in time for the turning of the year into equinox, and in time for a vocal immersion that I'd wanted to explore. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It'll probably take a little time more to fully grasp what this wintering has been supporting to shed and shift, but I feel a re-emergence now and a rekindled curiosity about this voice of mine and what it has to say. ⁣⁣

Meanwhile, I've been fuelled by sweet moments, an incomplete selection here, that have tided me through this long winter into spring 🌿

ONE WORD INTENTION AS CO-CREATION. for the past seven years I've been devoting to a one word intention for the year ahead. this partly came out of feeling frustrated and too heady with the usual goal-oriented resolutions, but also because as I get older I've just come to see that I really don't know what life has in store for me, and I'd like to honour the fact that life is really a co-conspirator for how my year unfolds ✨️ ⁣

it has been such a special ritual for me each year, and often a lovely surprise at the close of a year to see how the one word intention came to take form in ways I couldn't have named. so I'm sharing here a sort-of process if you will, should you feel called to do something similar:⁣

- I start by listening, listening for the words that catch my ears in conversation, in books or films in the liminal time between winter solstice and the lunar new year. I let the listening take time. ⁣

- once the word arrives, I take a breath and hold the word in my heart and sit down with a pile of magazine scraps - all images, no words - to see what images I'm drawn to. they don't need to make logical sense, but that somehow moves me inside: a flutter, an ache, a stirring.⁣

- the intention collage sits in my room, somewhere I can see it over the course of the year and at times I sit with it (most times it watches me as I watch it from the corner of my eye!) and at the close of the year as I reflect on the months gone by, I marvel at all the ways the word came to be in my life ♥️⁣

so curious to hear your one-word intentions if you feel to share them x

LANGUAGE OF CARE. in a month of deaths and health scares, I've been reacquainting with the language of care ❤️ ⁣

the care for self that comes firstly through and from the self: in the making of things, gifting my own touch support to myself, remembering that honesty and discipline too are also self-care. ⁣

the care for self through receiving from others: leaning into familiar spaces and being met, exploring new forms and avenues of care, looking out for nature's comforting reminders of continuation. ⁣

I was surprised to find that while 2025 was quite the rough ride, there was so much more that I felt grateful for. and how all the ways I was cared for through the year helped to soften the hard things so gratitude could emerge. so I'm closing out the year, reminded that the sweet sauce of life is relational and hoping that in some small way connection and community meets you too, today and everyday x

NOVEMBER. three words: so. much. shedding. was it like that for you too? ⁣

and yet, as always in the cycle and circle of things, with every ending, a beginning. it has been a month of reenlivening my heart with the help of the trees, music, travel, movement and friends. this, alongside such a revealing and reignition around relationships, with others and most of all with myself ♥️

NATURE KNOWS. each time I find myself in big nature I'm reminded that nature is my first teacher: of beauty, belonging, cycles and endurance. that I am a small part of the same we ❤️
