At 84, former police officer Lee Kim Hiong is living proof of how innovation can help save sight and improve quality of life.

After being diagnosed with choroidal melanoma, the most common form of ocular cancer, Mr Lee faced a difficult choice: removal of his eye or costly treatment overseas.

Instead, he became the first patient in Singapore to undergo plaque brachytherapy at SNEC, a sight-saving treatment pioneered by Prof Gavin Tan, Head and Senior Consultant, Surgical Retina Department, SNEC.

The outcome was life changing. The cancer was successfully controlled, and Mr Lee retained about 70% of his vision, allowing him to keep both his eye and his independence.

Today, plaque brachytherapy is giving patients with rare eye cancers new hope. Since introducing this treatment, SNEC has managed 24 cases of eye tumours, achieving more than 90% survival and eye-preservation rates and helping patients retain not just their sight, but also their quality of life.

Prof Tan hopes to expand access to this treatment across the region, strengthening expertise in managing rare eye cancers while helping to reduce costs and benefit more patients.

Today, we celebrated the dedication, compassion and unwavering commitment of our amazing nurses at SNEC.

Our CEO, Prof Aung Tin delivered the welcome address as we recognised the outstanding contributions of our nursing team, including recipients of the MOH Nurses’ Merit Award and Director of Nursing Award.

With this year’s theme, “Bloom & Unwind”, the celebration gave our nurses a well-deserved opportunity to relax, reconnect with colleagues and recharge. Staff put their knowledge to the test in a fun Kahoot! quiz with prizes awarded on the spot, enjoyed soothing aromatherapy, and got creative by making their own pressed dried flower keepsake kits. There was also delicious food, a Photo Booth to capture memorable moments, and plenty of laughter throughout the day.

To all our nurses, thank you for the compassion, resilience and professionalism you bring to every patient, every day. Your care makes a lasting difference, and we are grateful for all that you do.

Happy Nurses’ Day! 🌸

We were honoured to welcome Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Foreign Affairs, as our Guest of Honour at the opening ceremony of the 8th Asia-Pacific Glaucoma Congress & SNEC 35th Anniversary International Meeting, attended by over 2,600 delegates from nearly 50 countries on 24 July 2026.

In his address, Dr Balakrishnan paid a tribute to our founder, the late Prof Arthur Lim and the three values that built SNEC-

- Raising standards: "his insistence that every surgical procedure be recorded, that every complication be audited, that every opportunity to learn and to improve was pursued."

- Training: "to make sure that everybody had access to skills transfers... to sharpen each other's abilities and collectively raise standards across the world."

- Research: "..his insistence that research must be an integral, primary part of our service."

He added, "It's not enough to do the best for our patients... we needed to get to the cutting edge" which is reflected in SNEC and SERI's global impact across myopia, corneal surgery, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and AI.

Dr Balakrishnan served as SNEC's Medical Director in 1999–2000. Watch his full message in the video below.

✨ Vision 2034 in Progress: One Mission, Many Hands (2/3)

Harnessing technology to transform care! Dr Ng Si Rui is driving SNEC's digital transformation as Chief Medical Informatics Officer.

With a deep understanding of both clinical practice and health informatics, he is embedding smarter systems and data-driven tools into everyday workflows, making it easier for care teams to deliver timely, personalised care. His approach is grounded in listening first: understanding the real challenges faced by clinicians before designing solutions that truly work.

Because meaningful digital transformation isn't about technology, it's about the people it serves, and the patients who benefit.
