Strength training for elderly adults isn't optional. It's essential.

After 50, your body loses muscle faster than it builds it. This process is called sarcopenia, and it's one of the leading causes of falls, fractures, and loss of independence in older adults.

The good news? It's reversible. And you can start at home with zero equipment.

Swipe through for 5 beginner-friendly exercises you can try today. Each one targets the muscles that matter most for balance, mobility, and everyday movement.

And when you're ready for the next step, the Legends Programme is here. Physiotherapist-led group fitness for adults 50 to 90, designed so every movement is safe and scaled to you. Not a gym class. A programme built by clinicians who understand your body.

Muscle loss is not inevitable.

Over the weekend, Kylie Siu, our physiotherapist at Thrive Healthcare, presented at the Legends Chit Chat Corner on one of the most underrated topics in healthy ageing: how what you eat directly shapes how strong and independent you stay through the decades.

Here is what older adults actually need to know:

Sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss) begins in your 30s and speeds up after 60. But with the right nutrition, you can preserve and even build muscle at any age.

The two nutritional pillars that matter most:

1. Protein: aim for 1.2 to 1.6g per kg of body weight daily, spread across every meal, not just dinner. Ageing muscle needs more protein than standard guidelines suggest.

2. Calories: undereating quietly accelerates muscle loss. A simple starting point: bodyweight (kg) x 25 = your daily calorie floor.

The good news for Singapore? Chicken rice, steamed fish, tofu, and eggs are already excellent protein sources. It is mostly about getting the portions right, consistently.

Kylie has written this up into a full article with practical guides, food tables, and a sample day of eating using local meals.

Strong muscles support independent living. It starts on the plate.

Are you eating enough to support your muscles?

Many adults unknowingly fall short on:
• Daily protein intake
• Overall energy intake
• Resistance training exposure

The result? Gradual muscle loss that can impact strength, balance, and mobility over time.

In this post, Kylie explains:
🔹 Why muscle loss accelerates with age
🔹 How much protein you may actually need
🔹 Simple meal examples to reach your targets
🔹 The three pillars of maintaining strong muscle

Because staying active isn't just about exercise—it's also about fuelling your body well.

"I walk every day… isn't that enough for my bones?"

It's a fair question. And the honest answer is: probably not.

Bone adapts to mechanical load. Force, tension, impact. Walking doesn't create enough stimulus to drive meaningful bone adaptation in most people. That's not a criticism of walking. It's just biology.

What does work? Resistance training. Progressive loading. Weight-bearing exercise with enough force to send a clear signal to your skeletal system.

That's exactly why we built our Legends Programme at Rx Performance. Not general advice — targeted, evidence-based programming for people who want to build bone, not just maintain movement.

The science of strength just got an upgrade.

💪The American College of Sports Medicine has released its first major resistance training guidelines in 17 years, and the headline finding is refreshingly simple: any resistance training beats none.

Based on 137 systematic reviews covering 30,000+ participants, the new guidelines confirm:

🏋🏻‍♀️ Bands, bodyweight, or barbells all deliver real results

📝 You don't need to train to failure or follow complex programmes

⚖️ Consistency matters far more than complexity

🔑 Training major muscle groups twice a week is the key driver

At Thrive, this is exactly the kind of evidence-based guidance we build our care around. Strong bodies start with small, consistent steps, not perfect plans.
