USLTHC HANDS OVER ESSENTIAL MEDICAL AND OFFICE EQUIPMENT TO OBSTETRICS & GYNAECOLOGY AND OPHTHALMOLOGY DEPARTMENTS

The University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex (USLTHC) has handed over a box containing Gynae Operating Instruments and office equipment to its Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Ophthalmology Departments, following generous donations received through the Complex.

The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department received a complete set of Gynae Operating Instruments. The set of instruments was generously donated by Dr. Theodore Jarrett, whose first job as Gynecologist was at the PCMH Hospital in 1971, to USLTHC for the benefit of the department and the patients it serves at the PCMH.

The Ophthalmology Department also received a computer monitor, Central Processing Unit (CPU), printer, and cartons of printing paper donated by an anonymous donor.

The anonymous donor was reportedly inspired to make the donation after witnessing firsthand the compassionate and professional manner in which staff of the Ophthalmology Department attended to him and other patients. Moved by the quality of care and service he experienced, he felt compelled to support the department as an expression of appreciation.

Receiving the items, the Head of the Ophthalmology Department expressed profound gratitude to the anonymous donor and assured that the equipment and supplies would be used for their intended purpose. He further encouraged young doctors and other healthcare professionals to remain committed to compassionate and professional patient care, noting that patients observe and appreciate the seemingly small acts of kindness and dedication that often make an impact beyond the treatment of their illnesses.

Speaking on behalf of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, the Acting Head of Department described the donated instrument set as an answer to a long-overdue prayer. He explained that operating without an alternative set of essential instruments had presented a significant challenge to the department. He therefore expressed deep appreciation to the donor, noting that the equipment would contribute meaningfully to the care of women accessing services at the hospital.

On behalf of the donors and the University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex, Dr. Sonia Spencer and Professor Oluwadiya formally handed over the donated equipment to the respective departments.

The University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex deeply appreciates the generosity of the donors whose contributions will strengthen service delivery and improve the working capacity of the beneficiary departments.

24 NURSES CERTIFIED IN NEUROSURGERY CARE AS SIERRA LEONE ADVANCES SPECIALIZED HEALTHCARE CAPACITY

Twenty-four nurses have received diplomas in Neurosurgery Care following the successful completion of a specialized hybrid training program facilitated by Mission Brain in collaboration with the University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex (USLTHC) and the Ministry of Health.

The certificates were formally presented during the Connaught Hospital Management Meeting held today, marking another significant milestone in ongoing efforts to strengthen neurosurgical care services in Sierra Leone.

The training, delivered through a combination of online and in-person sessions, forms part of a broader partnership aimed at rebuilding and expanding specialized neurosurgical healthcare services within the country.

Speaking during the ceremony, Dr. Allieu Kamara disclosed that through the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Health, USLTHC, and Mission Brain, two Sierra Leonean doctors were sponsored for specialization in Neurosurgery. Dr. Kamara noted that he returned to Sierra Leone in 2024 and has since been actively involved in improving neurosurgical care delivery at Connaught Hospital, while his colleague continues specialized studies abroad.

He highlighted the establishment of a Neurological Unit at Connaught Hospital as a major achievement in advancing specialized healthcare services and emphasized that training nurses in neurosurgery care remains essential to the effective management of neurological cases.

Dr. Kamara expressed appreciation to the Chairperson of the USLTHC Board of Administration, Dr. Sonia Spencer, the Chief Medical Director of USLTHC, Professor Kehinde Oluwadiya, Connaught Hospital Management, the Ministry of Health, Mission Brain, and all supporting partners for their continued commitment to healthcare capacity development in Sierra Leone.

Also addressing the gathering, the Senior Matron congratulated the nurses for successfully completing what she described as a demanding and intensive program.

She noted that while many initially expressed interest when the training opportunity was announced, the 24 awardees distinguished themselves through resilience and commitment, describing them as pioneers in specialized neurosurgery nursing care at the institution.

The Senior Matron further commended Mission Brain for not only providing professional training and certification opportunities, but also for encouraging participants through thoughtful gestures of appreciation presented alongside the diplomas.

The certification ceremony reflects growing collaborative efforts among healthcare institutions and partners to strengthen specialized medical services and improve patient care outcomes across Sierra Leone.
