An interesting clip from a BBC Sounds episode highlighting a critical gap in medical research and a strong reliance on male anatomy in clinical trials.
By overlooking the biological complexities of female bodies, including hormonal variations, many drugs are developed without a full understanding of how they will affect women, raising important questions about safety, effectiveness and equity in healthcare.

New research from the Women’s Health Initiative reveals a significant link between cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and fracture incidence in postmenopausal women. Women with higher 10-year predicted CVD risk were more likely to experience major osteoporotic and hip fractures, even after accounting for lifestyle, clinical factors, and competing mortality.
These findings suggest that cardiovascular risk assessments could also inform fracture prevention strategies, highlighting an important intersection between heart and bone health in postmenopausal women.

A higher 10-year predicted CVD risk was associated with higher M*F and hip fracture risk after adjustment for sociodemographic, lifestyle, and clinical factors. CVD risk may have implications for fracture risk assessment in postmenopausal women.

Sleeping sickness, a deadly parasitic disease spread by tsetse flies, has long been difficult to treat safely, with older therapies involving toxic arsenic injections and complex hospital care. A breakthrough has come with the approval of Acoziborole, a single oral-dose treatment developed by Sanofi and the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDi). The drug enables “test-and-treat” strategies in remote settings, working for both early and late-stage disease without the need for spinal taps or specialist equipment. Clinical trials in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Guinea showed cure rates of up to 96%.

A single-dose pill for sleeping sickness could simplify treatment and accelerate elimination efforts in Africa.

In 2023, meningitis caused around 259,000 deaths and 2.5 million cases worldwide, disproportionately affecting children under five and countries in the African meningitis belt, including Nigeria, Chad and Niger. While vaccination campaigns against Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis, Haemophilus influenzae and Group B streptococcus have reduced disease burden, gaps in coverage, evolving pathogens like non-polio enteroviruses, and emerging fungal threats continue to drive deaths and disability.

Children under five and countries in the African meningitis belt continue to bear the greatest burden.

In Senegal, progress in reducing maternal mortality is now being matched by efforts to improve women’s experiences of childbirth. With support from the World Health Organization, the country is implementing respectful maternal care models that prioritise dignity, communication and emotional support alongside clinical safety. By transforming how care is delivered before and during birth, this approach is helping ensure that every woman can experience childbirth not only safely, but with confidence and respect.

Women spend significantly more of their lives in poor health than men (around nine years on average) often during their prime reproductive years. Many of these years are affected by female-specific disorders such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and menopause-related conditions, which, while typically benign, have profound personal and societal impacts. Addressing these conditions not only improves women’s quality of life but, according to the McKinsey Health Institute, could boost productivity and reduce healthcare costs by up to US$1 trillion annually.

Women spend 9 years of their lives in poor health, which is 25% more than men.1 For women, these years are not confined to the end of life, but centred earlier in life from menarche up to menopause.1 Over the past decade, substantial s*x differences in disease presentation, progression, and treatmen...
