Aweil West Cries for Help as Caterpillar Plague Worsens

Residents of Aweil West County are urgently calling for help after a massive caterpillar invasion hit several payams.

The insects are attacking people both day and night. Anyone who touches them gets severe, non-stop itching all over the body. No one is safe — children, adults, even newborns are suffering. Families are struggling.

Locals say the caterpillars show up in huge numbers, getting into homes and farms. The itching starts right after contact and can last for hours. Kids can’t sleep, farmers can’t work, students can’t study. Parents say babies cry all night from skin irritation.

Health centers are seeing more patients, but they don’t have enough medicine. Doctors warn that constant scratching can lead to skin infections, especially for children. People fear the problem will get worse if the caterpillars breed more this season.

Traditional treatments aren’t working. The community is now appealing to the Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Government, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Agriculture to step in fast.

They’re asking for:
1. Experts to identify the species and control it
2. Medical supplies for treatment
3. Public education on how to avoid contact
4. Fumigation in the worst-hit areas

Aweil West residents say they’re ready to work with health teams. But they need urgent action to stop the outbreak and bring life back to normal.

😭 Sad News: Announcement of the passing of Dr. Stanley Ambajoro

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Stanley Ambajoro this morning, 17th June 2026, at Juba Medical Complex.

Dr. Stanley was one of the few Moru intellectuals and the first Director General of Juba Teaching Hospital. A man of knowledge, service, and integrity who dedicated his life to health, education, and the growth of this country .

His funeral will take place at the late residence in Hai Kuwait, near the old KCB Bank

This is a huge loss. He leaves a gap that cannot be easily filled – not just for our great Moru community and Greater Mundri, but for South Sudan at large. We have lost a great man, a pillar, and a mentor.

May God rest his soul in eternal peace.
Our heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives, and all who mourn him.

Rest well, Dr. Stanley. Your service to our people will never be forgotten

Paul Hinz Praises Deng David G*i's Dedication in Caring for Stroke Survivor Koor Abraham G*i

IOWA, United States – American mentor and longtime friend of the South Sudanese community, Paul Hinz, has issued a heartfelt message praising the dedication and sacrifice shown by Deng David G*i and his family in caring for his brother, Koor Abraham G*i, following a life-threatening stroke in the United States.

In a statement addressed to the South Sudanese community, Hinz recounted his family's more than two-decade relationship with Koor Abraham G*i, whom he described as "like a son" since they first met in San Diego in 2002.

According to Hinz, he and his wife, Debra, have spent many years mentoring members of the South Sudanese community, including former Lost Boys of Sudan, supporting educational opportunities, fundraising efforts, and community development initiatives.

Hinz detailed Koor's journey from South Sudan to the United States, his academic and professional achievements as an engineer, and the challenges he faced during visits to South Sudan, including being caught up in conflict after the outbreak of civil war.

The statement focused primarily on Koor's medical emergency in 2025, when he suffered a severe stroke shortly after relocating to Iowa for a new engineering position with John Deere. Doctors reportedly gave little hope for his recovery, warning family members that he might never wake up, breathe independently, or regain normal function.

However, Hinz described what he called a "miraculous recovery," crediting both divine intervention and the unwavering commitment of Koor's brother, Deng David G*i, and his family.

According to Hinz, David left his job, relocated his family from Arizona to Iowa, and devoted himself full-time to caring for Koor throughout his hospitalization and rehabilitation. He said David's wife also spent countless hours assisting Koor with daily care, preparing traditional South Sudanese meals, and supporting his recovery.

"I have 100 percent confidence in Deng David and his wife and their ability and dedication to Koor and his children," Hinz wrote.

He further revealed that he and his wife personally loaned more than $45,000 to help cover Koor's medical and living expenses while insurance payments were delayed, noting that significant medical bills remain outstanding.

Hinz said doctors, nurses, and rehabilitation specialists involved in Koor's treatment described his recovery as one of the most remarkable they had witnessed and expressed interest in documenting his story.

The American mentor also praised the values demonstrated by David and his family, describing their actions as an example of the strength, sacrifice, and compassion found within the South Sudanese community.

"The dedication David showed to his brother was so great, so honorable, and so self-sacrificing that the South Sudanese community should be extremely proud of them," Hinz stated.

He concluded by encouraging members of the South Sudanese community to recognize the resilience of their people and to remain hopeful in the face of adversity.

The statement has drawn attention among South Sudanese communities both in the United States and abroad, with many viewing Koor Abraham G*i's recovery as an inspiring story of family support, perseverance, and faith.

South Sudan is facing a severe shortage of blood, with hospitals struggling to meet growing demand for lifesaving transfusions, health authorities said.

The Director of the National Blood Transfusion Service, Dr. Angelo Aruop, said the country is collecting far less blood than required, leaving a significant gap between supply and demand. He added that health facilities are under increasing pressure as they try to meet both emergency and routine transfusion needs.

“We have a shortage, a very severe shortage,” Aruop said, noting that the country is failing to meet international benchmarks for blood donation and does not even reach half of its annual requirements. He urged the public to donate blood to help close the gap.

The warning comes as South Sudan marks World Blood Donor Day, observed globally to raise awareness about the importance of voluntary blood donation.

The World Health Organization (WHO) also called for more people to donate, stressing that blood donors play a critical role in saving lives.

Dr. Katare Swaibu of WHO - Republic of South Sudan said this year’s theme, “Give blood, save lives” - highlights the importance of putting humanity at the centre of the campaign. He said donating blood helps save patients in need of emergency treatment, surgery, and transfusions, while also honouring voluntary donors who contribute without expecting anything in return.

Officials say increasing public awareness and encouraging more voluntary donations are key to addressing the country’s ongoing blood shortage.
