Paul Hinz Praises Deng David G*i's Dedication in Caring for Stroke Survivor Koor Abraham G*i
IOWA, United States – American mentor and longtime friend of the South Sudanese community, Paul Hinz, has issued a heartfelt message praising the dedication and sacrifice shown by Deng David G*i and his family in caring for his brother, Koor Abraham G*i, following a life-threatening stroke in the United States.
In a statement addressed to the South Sudanese community, Hinz recounted his family's more than two-decade relationship with Koor Abraham G*i, whom he described as "like a son" since they first met in San Diego in 2002.
According to Hinz, he and his wife, Debra, have spent many years mentoring members of the South Sudanese community, including former Lost Boys of Sudan, supporting educational opportunities, fundraising efforts, and community development initiatives.
Hinz detailed Koor's journey from South Sudan to the United States, his academic and professional achievements as an engineer, and the challenges he faced during visits to South Sudan, including being caught up in conflict after the outbreak of civil war.
The statement focused primarily on Koor's medical emergency in 2025, when he suffered a severe stroke shortly after relocating to Iowa for a new engineering position with John Deere. Doctors reportedly gave little hope for his recovery, warning family members that he might never wake up, breathe independently, or regain normal function.
However, Hinz described what he called a "miraculous recovery," crediting both divine intervention and the unwavering commitment of Koor's brother, Deng David G*i, and his family.
According to Hinz, David left his job, relocated his family from Arizona to Iowa, and devoted himself full-time to caring for Koor throughout his hospitalization and rehabilitation. He said David's wife also spent countless hours assisting Koor with daily care, preparing traditional South Sudanese meals, and supporting his recovery.
"I have 100 percent confidence in Deng David and his wife and their ability and dedication to Koor and his children," Hinz wrote.
He further revealed that he and his wife personally loaned more than $45,000 to help cover Koor's medical and living expenses while insurance payments were delayed, noting that significant medical bills remain outstanding.
Hinz said doctors, nurses, and rehabilitation specialists involved in Koor's treatment described his recovery as one of the most remarkable they had witnessed and expressed interest in documenting his story.
The American mentor also praised the values demonstrated by David and his family, describing their actions as an example of the strength, sacrifice, and compassion found within the South Sudanese community.
"The dedication David showed to his brother was so great, so honorable, and so self-sacrificing that the South Sudanese community should be extremely proud of them," Hinz stated.
He concluded by encouraging members of the South Sudanese community to recognize the resilience of their people and to remain hopeful in the face of adversity.
The statement has drawn attention among South Sudanese communities both in the United States and abroad, with many viewing Koor Abraham G*i's recovery as an inspiring story of family support, perseverance, and faith.
