What is Eczema?
Eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes
👉Dry, itchy skin
👉Redness or dark patches
👉Rough, scaly, or cracked skin
👉Sometimes small blisters or oozing
👉It can appear on the back, arms, legs, or face.
Can body lotion cause eczema?
Body lotion doesn’t usually cause eczema from nothing, but it can
Trigger or worsen it if the person is sensitive
Cause irritant or allergic contact dermatitis
👉Common triggers in lotions
Fragrances
Harsh preservatives (parabens, formaldehyde releasers)
Alcohol-based ingredients
Skin-lightening chemicals
How to manage / treat it
1. Stop the triggering lotion
Immediately discontinue the suspected product
Switch to mild, fragrance-free moisturizers
2. Moisturize properly (VERY important)
Use thick emollients like:
Petroleum jelly
Cream-based moisturizers (not watery lotions)
Apply 2–3 times daily, especially after bathing.
3. Medications
a. Topical corticosteroids (reduce inflammation)
👉Hydrocortisone (mild cases)
👉Betamethasone (moderate cases)
Use for short periods under guidance.
b. Antihistamines (for itching)
👉Loratadine
👉Chlorpheniramine
c. If infection is present
Scratching can lead to infection:
Antibiotic creams may be needed
4. Lifestyle care
👉Avoid hot water bathing
👉Use mild soap (or no soap on affected area)
👉Wear loose cotton clothes
👉Avoid scratching (trim nails)
