Psoriasis (pronounced suh-RYE-uh-sis) is a chronic autoimmune skin condition that causes skin cells to grow much faster than normal. Instead of taking about a month to renew, skin cells build up in just a few days, leading to thick, raised patches of skin.
Common symptoms include:
Thick, red patches of skin covered with silvery-white scales
Dry, cracked skin that may bleed
Itching, burning, or soreness
Thickened or pitted nails
Painful, swollen joints (in some people, known as psoriatic arthritis)
Psoriasis is not contagious—you cannot catch it from someone else through touch.
Common triggers
Stress
Skin injuries (cuts, scrapes, sunburn)
Infections (such as strep throat)
Cold, dry weather
Certain medications
Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption
