Behind every discussion on digital health is something much bigger than technology...people.

One of the most rewarding parts of coordinating this conference with the CCFP Trinidad Chapter team ( ) was seeing conversations move beyond apps and software and toward what really matters: connecting patients to better care.

Imagine a healthcare system where important information follows patients, where healthcare professionals have access to the records they need when they need them, and where care is more coordinated, efficient, and tailored to the services available.

No one person or event transforms a health system overnight, but bringing together healthcare leaders, innovators, educators, and clinicians felt like a meaningful step in the right direction.

Altruism comes in different forms during this Easter season. Someone once asked me if I donated blood because it's good for my health. While there are a few positive effects on the donor's health, I don't primarily do it for MY benefit. Whether this unit goes to a stranger or someone I know, I will never find out but it will be used for a patient who needs it.

Become a voluntary donor check out "Blood Donation | Ministry of Health" at https://share.google/w2bKd4htizGO4ZI9d

Spending the majority of the time with your blood glucose within an acceptable range is a lot better in the long term for your and fewer complications like nerve damage or kidney disease. Erratic highs and lows like the ones in the video can happen especially if your Christmas diet involved many high glycemic foods.

Track fluctuations using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and reveal on a daily basis if your blood sugar is really under control. It allows for more timely adjustments to your diet and medications.

Check out the membership and CGM offer from the this January. Make the resolution to stay in the green zone!

Diabetes isn't something that we need to hide.
By sharing experiences and information we can better manage this condition.

Listen to this unscripted interview with one of my patients about living with his recent diagnosis of diabetes and how it has changed the relationships in the workplace.

This audio content was published with the patient's consent for the purpose of healthcare promotion and public education via social media. It is not to be reproduced or altered in any way.

In an aging population where we are seeing serious and terminal illnesses later on in the disease process, palliative and holistic care become avenues to help provide the patient with more comfort and support.

Palliative care does not solely involve end of life preparations. In fact, with a multidisciplinary team, care goals can include improving quality of life in conditions that may or may not be curative.

For caregivers and family members of the patients with the illness, this can provide immense relief as they are guided through the process of symptom management and treatments that can possibly be done in one's own home.

Dance can enhance balance, mobility and coordination. All attributes that we would like our developing kids to have.

What's keeping them back? I remember dance being a part of our curriculum in primary school in the 90s. However, I currently see resistance to this idea from both parents and kids.

There is a connection between dance and athletics. If you don't believe me listen to the excerpt from the interview with retired basketball player Kevin Garnett.

It's not a stretch of the imagination to see that any introduction to dance would be of benefit to our children. Whether they turn out to have a career in athletics, performing arts or something else entirely. If anything, it gets them to have more movement breaks in their otherwise hectic weeks.

I'm not expecting my kids to master the art form but I definitely want them to understand what they can gain from it.

Healthy kids are better learners.

Breaking bad news is an incredibly complex and sensitive issue. But while it's a challenge for physicians to talk about serious diagnoses, from a patient's perspective there's quite a bit we should take into consideration regarding the delivery and the aftermath.

In a recent patient interview, I discovered something that she felt was lacking after receiving difficult news about her breast cancer.

This information undoubtedly allows me to plan for future patient encounters and is a consideration for those who have to embark on rigorous treatment, surveillance and follow up.

The following is the URL for the Trinidad and Tobago Association of Psychologists directory - psychologytt.org/ttap-members.html

Mental health professionals are specifically trained to help people cope with traumatic experiences and conditions that are overwhelming on a daily basis (among many other skills).

Please consider them your allies and a part of the multidisciplinary team that manages your condition.

Early detection is the aim. We have to do better at breast cancer screening. Too many patients on initial presentation are being seen with advanced or late stages of breast cancer.

Medicine continues to evolve in the same way physicians commit themselves to lifelong learning. The fear associated with detection should not outweigh the possibility of getting life altering treatments.

There is a belief that having breast cancer automatically means a mastectomy but that's not true at all. In fact, advancements in medical research have made breast-conserving surgeries more viable for many patients allowing for a tailored approach. Early detection therefore, increases the chances of successful treatment.

Don't wait for October to ask about breast cancer screening.

Fire safety is imperative. We know that Divali celebrations involve lighting deyas among other things, as firework tents encourage users to buy their explosive and colorful products (despite the Summary of Offences Act).

We want our kids to be part of the festivities but please explain to your families and friends the precautions you can take so that everyone can safely enjoy this holiday.

Be aware of flammable, loose clothing (especially indian wear) that may come in contact with the naked flames.

Oil and melted wax (and the clay deya itself) can become very hot and lead to superficial burns when in contact with the skin.

Last but not least, do not hold firecrackers and fireworks in your hand. Do not aim them at houses, near power lines or into a crowd or groups of people.

Read warning labels for the proper use.

Enjoy Divali and what it stands for, don't sustain injuries because of it.
