Your office thermostat is doing more than deciding if you reach for a sweater.

A 2021 review in the International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Health pulled together the evidence on indoor temperature, humidity, and ventilation — and the pattern is clear: these aren't comfort preferences, they're performance and health variables.

A few findings worth sitting with:

→ Cognitive performance peaks around 22–24°C (in temperate/cold climates) — go above or below that and focus and learning efficiency slip

→ Relative humidity of 40–60% is the sweet spot — too dry and you get tired eyes, worse mucous membrane symptoms, and measurably worse work output

→ Ventilation you can actually control (not just a window that happens to open) does double duty: it dilutes airborne pollutants and pathogens, and the psychological effect of having control improves comfort and satisfaction

The takeaway isn't "buy a better AC unit." It's that the room you work in every day has measurable levers — and most offices (and home offices) aren't tuned to any of them.

Where would you start — temperature, humidity, or airflow?

Addressing why someone drinks matters far more than just telling them to stop.

Loneliness, stress, and emotional disconnection often fuel self-medication far more than social gatherings do. True health isn't about quick fixes or surface-level rules—it’s about understanding the cause of your habits and rebuilding from within.
