Benign Intracranial Hypertension (BIH), also known as Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH), is a condition caused by increased pressure around the brain and spinal cord. While it most commonly affects women of childbearing age, it can occur in anyone. It can also occur in pregnancy.

Common symptoms include:
šŸ”¹ Persistent headaches
šŸ”¹ Blurred or fluctuating vision
šŸ”¹ Transient episodes of vision loss
šŸ”¹ Double vision
šŸ”¹ Pulsatile tinnitus (a ā€œwhooshingā€ sound in the ears)
šŸ”¹ Eye pain or pressure behind the eyes

If left untreated, BIH can lead to permanent vision loss, making early diagnosis and treatment extremely important.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, don’t ignore them—your eyes may be trying to tell you something.

I always feel like such a fan girl when I meet other female ophthalmologists in social settings especially pioneers in the field like Dr. and Dr. (we didn’t get a pic 😭)

There’s just something so special about being around women who understand the journey — the sacrifices, the long hours, the pressure, the balancing act as mothers and the passion it takes to do what we do.

I’m especially grateful for the women who came before us and paved the way with so much strength and grace. Your mentorship, encouragement in difficult moments and example have quietly shaped so many of us more than you probably even realize.

Thank you for opening doors, sharing wisdom, and showing younger female ophthalmologists that we can thrive while still remaining authentic, kind and human.

Beyond medicine, these moments always remind me how important community and support are. Women uplifting women will always be something I deeply admire and never take for granted šŸ¤

May is a very special month šŸ’™

Two years ago in May, I made a decision that stretched me in every possible way.

I left my babies 😭, quieted the doubts in my heart, and traveled across the world to Nandadeep Eye Hospital in India to refine my cataract surgical skills and learn advanced techniques in dealing with complicated cases.

It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done — not because of the distance, but because of everything I had to overcome within myself. The fear. The mum guilt. The uncertainty. But deep down, I knew that becoming better for my patients meant stepping far outside of my comfort zone.

That experience didn’t just change how I operate — it changed how I see myself as a surgeon. It gave me confidence, precision, and a deeper sense of purpose every time I step into the operating room.

To the incredible doctors and trainers at Nandadeep Eye Hospital especially Dr — thank you. Thank you for your mentorship, your generosity in teaching, and for sharing your expertise so selflessly. The impact of your guidance lives on in every surgery I perform and every patient whose vision is restored. I hear your voices during every surgery as I ensure that every step is done perfectly.

This journey will always be a part of me and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I was lucky to have made some lovely friendships along the way as well.

This is a reminder that growth often asks for grit and courage… and that saying yes, even when it’s hard, can change everything.

It’s just a door sign… but to me, it’s so much more. šŸ¤

Seeing my name outside this space stopped me for a moment today. Because I remember when this was only a thought, a hope, a quiet prayer I carried while working long days and pushing through so much uncertainty.

There were times I questioned if I could really build something of my own. Times I felt stretched thin, balancing everything—my patients, my family, my responsibilities, and this dream that refused to let me go.

This little sign is a reminder that progress doesn’t always come in big, loud moments. Sometimes it’s in the quiet milestones…the ones only you truly understand the weight of.

I’m so grateful for how far I’ve come—and even more excited for what I’m still building.

Find me at Southern Medical Clinic, 4th floor, West Wing. Call or WhatsApp 460-3937 for appointments. See you soon ā˜ŗļø

What becomes routine to my hands is never routine to the heart sitting across from me. There is fear in their eyes, hope in their voice, and a quiet surrender as they place their trust in me. It’s a responsibility that humbles me more with every passing year.

Beyond the microscopes, the machines, and the precision, there is something deeper—human connection, vulnerability, and trust. Each patient reminds me that this work is not just about restoring vision, but about holding space for someone in one of their most fragile moments.

It has taught me to slow down, to listen more intently, to reassure more gently, and to never lose sight of the weight of what I do. Because while it may be one of many surgeries in my day, for them, it is everything.

That perspective has changed me—not just as a surgeon, but as a person.

It is a privilege I never take for granted… to be trusted, to serve, and to play even a small role in helping someone see their world clearly again šŸ’œ

Screens are part of our daily lives, but too much screen time can take a toll on your eyes.

If you’re experiencing tired eyes, headaches, dryness, or blurred vision, you may be dealing with digital eye strain.

Give your eyes the break they deserve by following the 20-20-20 rule:
Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Small habits can make a big difference in protecting your vision.

If discomfort continues, it may be time for a comprehensive eye exam.

Glaucoma can affect anyone, but some people have a higher risk of developing the condition.

You may be at increased risk if you:
• Are over the age of 40
• Have a family history of glaucoma
• Have diabetes or high blood pressure
• Are of African or Caribbean descent
• Have high eye pressure
• Have had an eye injury or long-term steroid use

Because glaucoma often develops without symptoms, many people don’t realise there’s a problem until vision loss has already occurred.

The good news? A simple eye exam can detect glaucoma early and help protect your sight.

If any of these risk factors apply to you, don’t wait — schedule your eye exam and stay one step ahead.

Stay tuned as we continue our glaucoma awareness series.

Glaucoma is often called the silent thief of sight because it can develop without any early warning signs.

It happens when pressure builds up inside the eye and begins to damage the optic nerve — the part of the eye that sends visual information to the brain. Over time, this damage can lead to permanent vision loss if it is not detected and treated early.

In this first post, we’re showing how increased eye pressure affects the structures inside the eye and why monitoring it is so important.

Glaucoma cannot be reversed, but early diagnosis and proper management can protect your vision.

Stay tuned as we break down glaucoma in this series and help you understand your risk and how to protect your sight.

If you haven’t had your eyes checked recently, now is a good time to schedule an exam.
