Did you ever wonder if becoming a mother might not be possible in this lifetime?
After three heartbreaking miscarriages, Sibuko finally welcomed a miracle pregnancy at Lee Women’s Hospital.
Sibuko, originally from South Africa and now living in Taiwan with her husband Siphiwe, had tried many different ways and undergone numerous tests in hopes of welcoming their first child. Yet their journey to parenthood remained difficult.
“At that time, we even began to wonder if we were simply not meant to become parents…”
What broke their hearts the most was that Sibuko experienced three miscarriages along the way. During that period, she felt as though she had hit rock bottom emotionally.
“It felt like we had been completely defeated, and we were truly heartbroken. We even started packing our bags and seriously considered leaving Taiwan, because we felt we needed to escape from a place filled with painful memories.”
Later, a friend who had successfully conceived at Lee Women’s Hospital recommended Dr. Chung-Yi Chen, Vice Superintendent and an experienced reproductive medicine specialist.
After much consideration, Sibuko decided to come to Lee Women’s Hospital. As she said, “I needed an answer. I hoped that, at the very least, I could find out what the root of the problem was.”
When 28-year-old Sibuko first walked into the consultation room, Vice Superintendent Dr. Chung-Yi Chen immediately arranged further examinations, hoping to identify the possible reasons behind her recurrent miscarriages.
The blood test results showed an imbalance in some of her immune cell levels, suggesting that her immune and inflammatory responses might have been more active. Considering her history of multiple miscarriages, Vice Superintendent Dr. Chen further referred her to rheumatologist Dr. An-Ping Huo for reassessment and treatment from an immunological perspective.
From that moment on, Sibuko and her husband’s fertility journey slowly began to move in a new direction.
During treatment, Dr. Huo prescribed immune-modulating medications based on her test results to help regulate the overactive immune and inflammatory responses.
“Dr. Huo always did everything he could to help us. His determination meant so much to us.”
Sibuko shared that throughout the consultations, Dr. Huo was highly respectful, empathetic, and patient in listening to her concerns, helping her gradually regain confidence during a time of uncertainty.
This time, the baby stayed safely in Sibuko’s womb.
However, the shadow of her past miscarriages continued to follow her throughout pregnancy. Whenever she felt even the slightest discomfort, she would immediately visit the hospital to make sure the baby was safe.
It was not until her first child, Thingo, was born healthy and safe that she finally felt the heavy weight in her heart lift.
Looking at newborn Thingo, Sibuko was filled with gratitude and an almost unbelievable sense of happiness—she had truly become a mother.
The following year, as Sibuko and her husband planned to welcome a second baby, she returned once again to Dr. Huo’s clinic. Under his evaluation and follow-up care, she successfully became pregnant with her second child, looking forward to even more joy and warmth in their family.
Looking back on this journey, Sibuko is especially grateful to the medical team at Lee Women’s Hospital.
“Thank you, Dr. Chung-Yi Chen. If you had not arranged further examinations back then, I might never have found the real problem.”
“Thank you also, Dr. An-Ping Huo. Your guidance, wisdom, and professionalism supported us through the birth of our first child and helped us prepare to welcome our second.”
“And thank you to Dr. Ming-Che Chen, who cared for me during the early stages of pregnancy. He listened carefully and explained every step clearly, which made me feel truly reassured.”
From recurrent miscarriages and immune testing to subsequent treatment and pregnancy follow-up, this journey was never easy.
Each new beginning required the courage to move forward again after disappointment.
