💙 From a Mother’s Journey to a Community’s Mission

Before she became the founder of the Samuel Ochora Foundation, Lucy Flora Akello was first a mother searching for answers.

As a teacher and a mother of two children; one diagnosed with Autism and the other with Down syndrome - Lucy experienced the questions, uncertainty, and challenges that many families face after receiving a diagnosis.

She also witnessed something else: the stigma, misunderstanding, and lack of support that many children with disabilities and their families experience within our communities.

Rather than allowing these experiences to define her family, Lucy chose to turn them into a mission of hope.

Inspired by the compassion and vision of her late brother, Dr. Samuel Ochora, she founded the Samuel Ochora Foundation to help ensure that no family has to walk this journey alone.

Today, we continue working to raise awareness about Autism and Down syndrome, support caregivers, promote inclusive education, and advocate for communities where every child is valued, respected, and given the opportunity to thrive.

Lucy often reminds parents that progress happens “little by little.” She encourages families to remain consistent with therapy, trust qualified healthcare professionals, and never lose hope.

Her story reminds us that even the most difficult journeys can become a source of hope for others.

Thank you for being part of our journey as we continue serving children with disabilities and their families.

đź’™ The Story Behind Samuel Ochora Foundation

Many people have asked why our foundation is called Samuel Ochora Foundation. Today, we’d like to share the story behind the name.

Dr. Samuel Ochora was a man known for his kindness, generosity, faith, and love for others. From a young age, he would give his pocket money to people in need because helping others came naturally to him.

As he grew older, his compassion touched many lives, including those of his nephew and niece, who were diagnosed with Down syndrome and Autism. He believed every child had unique gifts and deserved to be loved, included, and given the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Those who knew Samuel remember his warm smile, peaceful spirit, honesty, and unwavering trust in God. He believed that with faith, determination, and hard work, anything was possible.

Although he passed away on 26 January 2024, his dream lives on through the Samuel Ochora Foundation.

Every awareness campaign, every church outreach, every radio talk show, and every child and family we support is a continuation of the compassion and hope that Samuel shared throughout his life.

Thank you for being part of this journey with us as we continue his legacy.

✨ We are excited to introduce the Samuel Ochora Foundation (SOF) ✨

Samuel Ochora Foundation is a Community-Based Organisation (CBO) registered in April 2026 and currently operating in Gulu and Omoro Districts in Northern Uganda.

Founded in memory of Dr. Samuel Ochora, SOF exists to support children with Autism and Down syndrome and the families and caregivers who walk this journey with them.

We believe every child has value, unique abilities, and the potential to thrive when given the right support and opportunities.

Through community awareness, early intervention support, caregiver empowerment, and advocacy for inclusive education, we are working towards building communities where children with disabilities are understood, accepted, and included.

Our vision is a world where children with disabilities are treated with dignity, respect, and empowered to reach their full potential.

Guided by Christian values and a commitment to excellence, honesty, integrity, and respect, we seek to bring hope, healing, and restoration to children with disabilities and their families.

Since our registration, we have started engaging communities through awareness campaigns, radio talk shows, church outreaches, and partnership-building efforts aimed at creating greater understanding and inclusion.

Creating lasting change requires all of us. We welcome partnerships and support from parents, community leaders, educators, healthcare professionals, organisations, and individuals who share our commitment to making communities more inclusive.

Join us on this journey as we work to create a future where every child is seen, valued, and supported.
