Health Talk 5 & Mental Health and Non-Communicable Disease Assessments 5 – Biira & Kaladima 📍

On the same day, our team split into two groups to carry out activities in two different villages: Biira and Kaladima.

In Biira, we returned to Biira Primary School for our fifth health talk, where we continued our sessions with students from P4 to P7. This time, the local Health Assistant joined us, making the session even more interactive. Through games and engaging activities, we discussed important health topics in a fun and accessible way.

We also spoke with the school about reactivating their existing School Health Club, an exciting step towards creating a lasting impact beyond our visits.

Afterwards, the team continued its activities in the Biira community together with our partners Reproductive Health Uganda (RHU) and Lightray, who provided valuable health services alongside our awareness sessions. We ended the day by celebrating Lightray team member Evron’s birthday with everyone present—a small but joyful moment during another meaningful day in the field.

Meanwhile, our second team travelled to Kaladima, where they carried out the fifth mental health assessment and engaged with members of the local community. A representative from Rotary Gulu joined the team and showed great enthusiasm for our project and its activities.

Awoo Outreach: Assessments & Health Talk Together 💚

This week in Awoo, we successfully combined our Mental Health Assessment (MHA), Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Assessment and Health Talk into one outreach day for the very first time. By bringing these activities together, we were able to reach even more people and provide both health education and essential health assessments within the same community.

The day ran smoothly, with many patients attending the assessments. After a community meeting in the village, many residents joined our Health Talk, creating a great opportunity to share important health information and engage with the community. Earlier in the day, we were also welcomed by an enthusiastic group of students whose active participation and curiosity made the school session a real success.

We were grateful to be joined by our partners Tackle Sickle Cell and Lightray, whose contributions helped make the outreach even more impactful. We also want to thank the local Health Assistant, who joined us during the community Health Talk and played an important role in supporting the day’s activities.

This first combined outreach showed the value of integrating health education with community assessments. We are grateful for the warm welcome in Awoo and look forward to building on this approach in the future. 🌿

Mental Health & Non-Communicable Disease Assessments 4 in Otwee

Our third assessment day in Otwee started with an unexpected challenge: on the way there, one of the car’s shock absorbers broke. Luckily, everyone arrived safely and the team was still able to continue the planned activities.

It was a quieter day, with fewer patients than during the previous assessments, but this also allowed the team to take enough time for every individual. The mental health and non-communicable disease assessments went smoothly, and everyone who attended received the necessary attention and guidance.

Even though there were fewer patients, everything went according to plan. Another valuable assessment day completed successfully thanks to the commitment and flexibility of the entire team!

Mental Health & Non-Communicable Diseases Assessments 2 in Atiak 🌿

This week, our assessment teams continued their work in Atiak, where we carried out both the Mental Health Assessment (MHA) and the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Assessment. As this new initiative progresses, every assessment day adds valuable insights that will help shape future healthcare projects in Northern Uganda.

The day was also a great opportunity for collaboration beyond the assessments themselves. Our Belgian Outreach Coordinator, Kaat, worked closely with Bosco, the Ugandan Outreach Coordinator, to start preparing next year’s outreach programme. Together, they exchanged ideas, discussed improvements and reflected on how to further strengthen the collaboration with our Ugandan partners.

A special thank you also goes to Jan and Hilde for leading the Mental Health Assessment and guiding the team throughout the data collection process. Their expertise and dedication play an important role in making this initiative a success.

Each assessment brings us closer to understanding local healthcare needs and helps lay the foundation for future projects that are tailored to the communities we work with. 🌍💙

Health Talk 3: Wrapping up a busy day in Odokonyero 🌍

Our third Health Talk took us to Odokonyero, where we were welcomed by an incredibly enthusiastic group of students. Their curiosity, participation and eagerness to learn made the school sessions a wonderful way to start the day.

In the afternoon, we continued our activities in the community together with our partners RHU and Lightray. While RHU provided family planning services, Lightray offered hepatitis B testing and vaccinations, helping us bring both health education and healthcare closer to the community.

This day also marked the end of a full week of activities. Every day brought new communities, new conversations and new opportunities to make an impact. Seeing the dedication of the entire team throughout the week made this final Health Talk even more rewarding.

Thank you to the community of Odokonyero for your warm welcome and active participation. We are grateful to share these moments and continue learning and growing together. 💙

Mental Health & Non-Communicable Diseases Assessments: Listening to improve healthcare 🌿

Over the past few days, we visited Awach Health Centre IV and Cwero Health Centre III to support two important assessments that will help shape future healthcare initiatives in Northern Uganda. Introduced as a new initiative this year, these assessments are helping us build a stronger understanding of local healthcare needs and priorities.

Together with our Ugandan student partners and Mental Health Uganda, we worked on a Mental Health Assessment (MHA) to gain a better understanding of the current mental healthcare system. Through conversations with healthcare staff, patient interviews and community surveys, the team is gathering valuable insights into the challenges people face and the support that could make the greatest difference.

At the same time, NU-CHO is conducting a Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Assessment, focusing on hypertension, diabetes and sickle cell disease—the most common chronic diseases in Uganda. By learning more about how care is currently organised, the team hopes to identify opportunities to strengthen these services in the future.

These assessments were a true team effort. From conducting interviews and collecting data to preparing equipment and coordinating the practical aspects of the day, everyone contributed to making the fieldwork a success.

Every conversation, every interview and every piece of data brings us one step closer to understanding the needs of the communities we work with. Because meaningful and sustainable change starts with listening. 🌍🤝

Health Talk 2: A meaningful day in Olinga 🌿💙

For the second health talk of our project, we visited Olinga, a community with two schools. Students from both schools came together for sessions on menstrual health, puberty, teenage pregnancy and oral health, allowing us to reach a large group of young people at once.

Afterwards, we headed into the community together with our partners RHU and Lightray. RHU joined us to provide family planning services, cervical cancer screening and HIV testing, while Lightray offered hepatitis B testing and vaccinations. Thanks to their collaboration, participants only needed one finger prick to be tested for both HIV and hepatitis B.

Based on the requests of the local Village Health Team (VHT), our community sessions focused on family planning, hepatitis B, sickle cell disease and Ebola awareness.

Halfway through the first session, the rain suddenly started pouring down. We took shelter in the classrooms of a nearby school, where we simply continued the health talks until the weather cleared. A little rain could not stop the community from learning!

As our planned outreach could no longer take place because of ebola, we also donated a package filled with medical supplies to the local health centre to provide additional support.

We ended a successful day with sunshine, smiles and a sweet surprise: on the way back, Dr. Jaspher treated the entire team to fresh sugarcane to celebrate a day well spent. 🌞🎉

Our first Health Talk of this project was a real success! 💚

In the morning, our team visited a local school, where we held interactive health talks for two different age groups.

By tailoring each session to the students' age, we created a safe space for them to learn, ask questions and engage in meaningful conversations about their health. At the end of each session, students had the opportunity to anonymously submit their questions, which we answered together right away.

In the afternoon, we continued our work in the community with more health talks, followed by sickle cell anemia screenings and Hepatitis B screenings and vaccinations. By combining health education with accessible healthcare services, we aim to empower communities with both knowledge and the care they need.

The positive feedback from both the Village Health Teams and community members reminds us why this work matters. We are incredibly grateful for the warm welcome and inspired to keep making a difference together.

A special thank you to for helping make our team recognizable through your support with our T-shirts. We truly appreciate your contribution!🤝
