The facility established in 2003 by an American Doctor Scott who felt a mission to come and serve the Batwa pygmies who had been evicted from the Bwindi Impenetrable forest

In this video, Dr. Luke Mugabe shares about his internship experience after spending 11 months at Bwindi Community Hospital.

He is one of the 11doctors who were placed at Bwindi Community Hospital by the Ministry of Health for a 12 month internship.

According to Dr. Luke, "This place has been more than a home for most of us...this is the only place I have seen where everyone is treated the same ."

Health Beyond Hospital Walls

At Bwindi Community Hospital, our commitment to care extends far beyond the facility. Every day, our teams reach out to communities with vital health services.

Sometimes, a mother delivers in a village, and our midwives respond swiftly to save both mother and child.

Sometimes, we follow up with malnourished children to monitor their recovery.

At other times, we bring mental health services directly to the village level.
We also deliver antenatal care, postnatal care, family planning, and cancer screening to mothers in hard-to-reach areas.

On different days, we engage the youth with community-friendly services.
We conduct surgical screening outreaches to identify and support those in need.

And importantly, we provide health education and disease prevention programs empowering families on hygiene, nutrition, immunization, among others.

Bwindi Community Hospital serves a population of over 100,000 people across 101 villages, working hand in hand with 525 Village Health Volunteers, including 23 from Batwa settlements, to reach all 22,862 households in our catchment area.

Every outreach is a step toward making sure health truly reaches every individual in the catchment area.

Bwindi Hospital Builds Neonatal Care Capacity in Kanungu

Bwindi Community Hospital recently concluded a transformative 5-day neonatal training program, designed to strengthen the skills of healthcare providers in caring for small and sick newborns.

The training that was led by the Bwindi Community Hospital Pediatrician, Dr. Daphine Ansiimire brought together doctors, nurses, and midwives from health centers in Kanungu district.

The neonatal training was organized to address critical gaps in newborn care, particularly in rural settings where access to specialized services is limited.

Emergency Training at Bwindi Community Hospital

At , we believe that every second counts in an emergency.

This week, we are privileged to host Brenda Kirkley and a team of Emergency specialists from the United States, who are providing refresher training for our staff as well as the community members, including Boda Boda riders, porters, and UWA rangers.

Today, they trained Nursing students in rapid response techniques.

We believe that this training will strengthen our ability to serve our community with confidence and compassion.

Big thanks to Brenda and team for empowering our staff, students and community in emergency care.
