WHY IS A DEAD BODY USUALLY POSITIONED FACING UPWARDS?
The funeral profession is different from many other sectors because death comes with a profound emotional weight. It can arrive unexpectedly, leaving families with grief, disbelief and questions they may never have thought about before.
One of those questions is: Why do funeral professionals normally position the deceased on their back, facing upwards?
This is known as the supine position, and it serves several purposes.• Peace and rest: The posture resembles peaceful sleep and has therefore become associated with eternal rest.
• Dignity: It allows the deceased to be presented respectfully, particularly during viewing and final ceremonies.
• Family closure: Keeping the face visible allows relatives to see their loved one for a final farewell where viewing is part of their tradition.
• Practical preparation: The position provides a stable arrangement for preparation, dressing, embalming where applicable, transportation and placement in a casket.
• Religious and cultural meaning: Many Christian traditions have historically associated burial orientation with religious symbolism. However, practices are not universal. In Islamic burial, for example, the deceased is traditionally placed on the right side with the face directed toward the Kaaba.
This is why funeral directing is not simply about generating sales.
A professional funeral director must understand the emotional, cultural, religious and practical questions surrounding death—and patiently help families navigate them.
At VNA FUNERAL SERVICES, we do not want families to leave with unanswered questions. We explain what we do, why we do it and how every stage can be handled with dignity.
Because when grief makes everything confusing, professional guidance matters. +256707078952

WHY FUNERAL WORK SHOULD NEVER BE A SOURCE OF SHAME
One of the greatest misconceptions in society is that people who work in the funeral industry should be uncomfortable speaking about their profession. Recently, after recruiting new staff to support our growing branches, one of the new employees asked me whether it feels frightening to openly identify as a funeral worker, particularly as an embalmer.
As a Funeral Director, I have spent years serving families through some of the most painful moments of their lives. My answer was clear: there is absolutely nothing shameful about funeral work.
Every profession exists because society needs it. Vehicle dealers help people acquire transportation. Teachers shape minds. Website designers build digital solutions. Builders construct homes. Likewise, funeral professionals help families navigate grief and give their loved ones a dignified farewell.
Many people only see the burial ceremony itself, but they rarely witness the extensive planning that takes place before, during, and after the funeral. We coordinate casket selection, body preparation, transportation, funeral programs, religious services, mourners' arrangements, burial procedures, tomb construction and finishing, and countless other details that help families find comfort during difficult times.
Our work is not merely about death. It is about respect, compassion, organization, and honouring a life that was lived. We stand beside families when emotions are highest and decisions are hardest. We help bring order where there is confusion and provide support where there is sorrow.
Funeral professionals are not different from other workers. We have feelings, families, dreams, and responsibilities. We laugh, we cry, and we carry the emotional weight of helping others through loss.
I encourage every funeral worker, embalmer, funeral attendant, driver, grave finisher, and funeral director to be proud of the service they provide.
