Finding a q***r-affirming therapist can feel overwhelming — especially if you have had experiences where you spent half the session explaining your relationship before the actual work could begin.

Here is what to actually look for:

A genuinely q***r-affirming therapist uses your pronouns and your partner's name correctly without being reminded every session.

They don't treat your q***r identity as either a problem to fix or the only lens they look through.

They apply evidence-based frameworks — like the Gottman Method — with awareness of how those approaches fit q***r couples and families, not just the populations those methods were originally designed for.

They understand that q***r grief is a real clinical concept: grief over chosen family loss, coming out in later life, or relational trauma that mainstream frameworks often miss.

When you name something hard, they don't minimize it by saying everyone feels that way sometimes.

You deserve care that holds the full picture of who you are.

At Brain & Heart Healing in Abilene, TX, we are a q***r-affirming practice currently accepting new clients — individuals, couples, and families.

More Pride, Less Prejudice 🌈

At our practice, we believe therapy is a space where you can entirely unmask and be celebrated for exactly who you are. Whether you are navigating the complexities of coming out, exploring your identity, or simply looking for a therapist who truly gets it without you having to explain the basics, we are here for you.

We provide LGBTQIA+ affirming care that honors your lived experiences, relationship structures, and unique journey. No judgment, no prejudice—just a safe, supportive space to heal, grow, and live colorfully.

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a person in possession of a good life, must be free to love whoever they want.” (With apologies to Jane Austen, but we think she’d approve!)

Happy Pride Month from Brain & Heart Healing.

June is a time to celebrate — and for many q***r people, it is also a time to feel deeply. To hold both the joy of being visible and the weight of everything it has cost to simply exist authentically in the world.

We see both. We hold both. And that is exactly what therapy at Brain & Heart Healing looks like.

Your identity is not a problem to be solved. It is part of your story — and your story matters.

If you have been waiting for a sign that it is safe to reach out, consider this your invitation. We are a q***r-affirming practice in Abilene, TX, currently accepting new clients.

Your body remembers what your mind tries to forget.

That is the core insight behind Dr. Bessel van der Kolk's landmark work, The Body Keeps the Score.

Trauma doesn't just live in your thoughts. It lives in your nervous system, your muscles, your chest, your gut. It shows up as tension you can't explain, an immune system that won't cooperate, a startle response that fires when there's nothing to fear, or a body that never quite feels safe — even in a room where nothing is wrong.

This is not weakness. This is biology.

When we experience something overwhelming, the brain's threat-detection system (the amygdala) can get stuck in survival mode. The thinking brain — the part that processes time and context and tells you "it's over now" — gets essentially shut out of the conversation.

So the body keeps reacting. Long after the danger has passed.

Healing from trauma isn't just about talking through what happened. It's about helping the body learn — at a nervous system level — that it is safe now.

At Brain & Heart Healing, we take a body-informed approach to trauma treatment, drawing on the groundbreaking research of Dr. van der Kolk and others in the field of trauma neurobiology.

Based on the work of Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, M.D.
