The Lifting Their Minds Project is hosting a Mohawk Auction at the MCA Health Facility lobby this Thursday, August 27th from 9 to 3pm.

Funds raised will be directed toward the rental costs for the Coming Home Project, a family- and community-led hospice for those who cannot return home to pass away.

Diane Boots guides patients and their family members through the dying process by providing education, counseling, and hands-on training.

This morning, I had the opportunity to be on CKON Radio to encourage our community to support the Coming Home Project and help us with our rental expenses. ❤️

I am incredibly grateful for the generous cash donation I received from an elder who shared that she fully supports our project and hopes others will contribute as well.

She shared a deeply personal experience with me. She reflected that, with the right support and assistance, she may have been able to have her husband pass away in a supportive residence rather than a nursing home. Her words were a powerful reminder of why this work is so important.

She encouraged our community to come together, support this project, donate in memory of loved ones, and help in any way possible. She reminded me that I am only one person, and that this work truly requires a community effort. ❤️

I left our visit feeling incredibly grateful, encouraged, and inspired. These are the moments that give me hope, strength, and the endurance to keep moving forward and succeed.

Together, we can make a difference. Please support the Coming Home Project in any way you can. Every donation, every act of kindness, and every word of encouragement matters. ❤️

I would like to commend Tribe’s Health Services for their dedication to providing comprehensive care. In light of New York State’s recent passage of the Medical Aid In Dying Act, I respectfully request that you consider developing an educational announcement or conducting a workshop to address this significant development and provide clarity on the following aspects:

1. Has the administration/board discussed the implications of this Act on our community members?
2. Do our current medical providers support this Act, and if not, what alternatives are available to patients?
3. As a Mental Health Assessment is a requisite, is our Mental Health Department equipped and qualified to fulfill this requirement?
4. In the event that a patient’s request is denied and they believe it was based on the provider’s personal beliefs, what recourse do they have?
5. Given that Medicaid may not cover the costs associated with doctor and mental health visits, as well as the medication itself (which can be up to $1,000), is Health Services able to provide financial assistance or cover these costs for community members?
6. In cases where a patient is unable to swallow the medication, will Health Services provide alternative methods of administration, such as IV or re**al?
7. Will a physician or medical personnel be available to administer the medication if the patient is unable to take it orally?
8. What is the expected timeframe from the initial decision to receiving the medication?

I firmly believe that our community needs to engage in an open and informed discussion about this topic. Failure to do so may result in unnecessary stress and conflict for families during an already difficult time, as they strive to honor their loved one’s final wishes. By creating a positive and educational platform, we can work towards a collective understanding and consensus, ensuring that our community members feel supported and respected in their choices.
