Things TCM Practitioners Notice Instantly โ Part 1: The Face ๐
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, diagnosis often begins before a person ever sits down on the treatment table.
Weโre observing complexion, facial color, tension patterns, expression, brightness, and overall vitality โ not to judge appearance, but to understand what the body may be trying to communicate.
Some examples:
๐ด Redness can suggest heat, stress, inflammation, or overwork
โช Pale complexion may point toward qi or blood deficiency
๐ก A sallow or yellow tone is often associated with dampness or digestive imbalance
โซ Dark circles under the eyes may reflect exhaustion, stress, or depletion
Even areas of the face are traditionally connected to different organ systems:
โข Forehead โ digestion/stomach
โข Cheeks โ lungs
โข Chin/jaw โ hormones & reproductive health
Traditional face reading in Chinese medicine also included personality observations. One of my professors once joked that very thick eyebrows in women were historically thought to indicate a โstrong-willedโ or fiery personality. Ancient practitioners were incredibly observant of both physical and emotional patterns.
Your tongue is only one piece of the puzzle. In TCM, the whole person tells a story.
