Hahaha. I jokingly refer to myself as The W***e Of Babylon frequently. Or am I joking….

A woman dressed in scarlet. A golden cup in her hand. A beast beneath her.

In the Book of Revelation, the figure commonly called the W***e of Babylon embodies corruption, excess and persecution. Her splendour conceals violence. Often understood as a symbol of imperial Rome, she represents a power that enriches itself while consuming human lives. Her story moves towards destruction.

Centuries later, Aleister Crowley took that condemned imagery into the spiritual world of Thelema and radically changed its meaning.

Under the name Babalon, the Scarlet Woman became sacred.

In his visionary text The Vision and the Voice, her cup holds a mystery of spiritual transformation. The blood of the saints becomes the life and separate identity surrendered into divine union. Her embrace of all existence expresses a love that withholds itself from nothing.

The language remains deliberately shocking. Crowley retains the Beast, the blood and the title Mother of Abominations, placing them within a vision of ecstasy, understanding and holiness. The imagery that once announced condemnation now carries revelation.

This is a modern occult reinterpretation of biblical symbolism. Calling Babalon an ancient Babylonian goddess erases the particular history that makes her story so striking.

For a contemporary reader, that transformation opens a powerful question about shame, authority and who gets to define the sacred.

What happens when the figure a story taught you to condemn becomes the one who asks you to look deeper?

Contained power. She knows she can raise up and call up whatever she likes but she doesn’t have to because she is inherently powerful. She chooses peace because she can. Because she doesn’t need to make display of what is already her own. She is oftentimes severely maligned by being cast as merely the goddess of love and lust. Her lore shows she suffered from great adversity from the male gods. What Zeus did to her is a great example. She was blamed and punished for her beauty and power and how it impacted other male gods. She was used like currency. Aphrodite has powers far beyond being The Goddess Of Love.

I respect that Craft looks different for each of us. Each of us have different ethics and belief systems. Diversity is the bloody, beating heart of witchcraft. But I personally won’t use witchcraft to solve or settle all of my problems and disputes. I don’t use it for what I deem as petty. My definition might not fit yours, and I am not asking it to. How boring if all our praxises looked the same.
To me; my witchcraft is serious, it has sharp, bloody teeth. Not everyone that displeases me deserves to feel the full force of that. As I grow older, I think a lot more about the moves I make before I make them. Like a general assessing vulnerabilities and weaknesses. Sure I could cast against them, but sometimes it’s more fun to wish true self-awareness on someone who has never experienced it before. Destroying someone far weaker than me feels chicken s**t. Self-awareness can strip someone of their pride, removing all artifice. Self-awareness is the true reflection of our souls. When you have lived decades in self-denial and pity, being faced with your true face is life altering. And once you are aware of self, it’s a door that won’t remain locked no matter how hard you try to keep that particular beast at bay.
