NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has launched a clinical trial to help people with alpha-gal syndrome, a condition caused by tick bites that triggers an allergic reaction to a sugar in red meat.

🥩 For the first time, the study will give these people solid evidence on whether they can eat GalSafe pork, which doesn’t have the alpha-gal sugar, without reacting to it. If so, the meat could also be used to confirm whether participants in future studies truly have the allergy, accelerating the path toward prevention and treatment.

🔬 The trial will also help scientists figure out whether the sugar is the only molecule responsible for triggering reactions, or if other molecules are involved, too. At the same time, researchers will look for measurable clues in the body that could help doctors predict who is at risk and better understand what happens during a reaction.
