Many believe food allergies are a childhood condition. In fact, more than 10% of adults manage at least one food allergy. Almost half are navigating life with multiple food allergies - making daily decisions even more challenging and risk of reaction even higher.

In honor of food allergy awareness week, it bears repeating:
Food allergies are a real diagnosis - not a preference.

Feeding babies diverse foods starting at 4-6 months of age teaches their immune system to tolerate foods. This can reduce the risk of food allergies for many children. Talk with your child's pediatrician at their 4-month well child visit to make a food introduction plan.

Remember: there are over 300 risk factors that can influence the development of food allergies. Even if you introduce foods early, other factors not in your control may cause food allergies. So while taking this step can lower the odds, it does not completely prevent all food allergies.
