I have some exciting news: Life Backup Plan has advanced to the semifinals of the TiE Women Global Pitch Competition through the Los Angeles chapter!

We had only a 25% chance of moving forward, so earning a place in the semifinal round feels especially significant.

This is an exciting validation of the problem Life Backup Plan is solving and the potential of the platform we are building. Our goal is to replace fragmented health, safety, caregiving, emergency preparedness, and critical-life information with one secure, connected platform.

People frequently ask me how I came up with the name Life Backup Plan.

The answer goes back to my career in information technology and a story I heard at a conference in 2002.

A speaker described how he had persuaded his company to create an off-site data backup shortly before September 11. The company’s Manhattan office was destroyed, but its information survived. Because its systems had been backed up somewhere else, the company could recover and move forward.

That story never left me.

Eventually, it led me to ask: What is my backup plan if something happens to me?

How will people know I need help? How will they get into my home? Who will care for my cats? How will doctors obtain my medical information? How will my family find my critical documents and understand my wishes?

Those questions became the idea behind Life Backup Plan.

What is the backup plan for your life?

In IT, important information is backed up constantly, often in multiple locations. If one system or location is lost, the information can still survive.

But what happens when the unavailable “system” is you?

Who knows you need help?
Who can enter your home?
Who will care for your pets?
Who can access your medical information?
Who knows where your critical documents are?
Who understands your final wishes?

Those questions inspired the name Life Backup Plan.
