Night-Time Safety in Dementia Care
Night-time confusion, wandering, and poor balance can increase the risk of falls and injuries. Caregivers can improve safety by:
* Clearing pathways and removing loose rugs or clutter
* Using gentle night-lights in bedrooms, hallways, and bathrooms
* Securing doors, windows, medications, and hazardous items
* Making bathroom access easier with grab bars and nonslip surfaces
* Keeping a calm, familiar bedtime routine
* Checking for pain, hunger, thirst, discomfort, or toileting needs
* Using alarms or motion sensors when appropriate
* Avoiding unsafe lifting and seeking guidance on safe transfers
Sudden or severe changes in sleep, behaviour, or mobility should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
A safe night begins with preparation, reassurance, and compassionate care.
