Understand insulin resistance. Reset your metabolism. Understand insulin resistance.

I’m Dr. Tom Bolan—“Dr. B”—a 44-year healthcare professional and metabolic health educator. Today, my focus is helping adults understand insulin resistance and how it can affect blood sugar, hunger, cravings, energy, stubborn belly fat, and the body’s ability to burn fat for fuel. Many people have been told that the answer is simply to eat less, exercise harder, or give up every food they enjoy. Bu

t when insulin resistance is part of the problem, another restrictive diet may not address what is happening metabolically. That is where a metabolic reset can help. I share simple, practical strategies designed to support steadier blood sugar, fewer sugar and food cravings, better appetite control, improved insulin sensitivity, and a healthier metabolism—without making healthy living feel impossible. My approach includes education around fiber, meal order, food choices, meal timing, movement, and other sustainable habits that can help your body respond to insulin more effectively. I also share the natural protocol and practical strategies I have personally used to help reverse my own insulin resistance and regain better control of my blood sugar—without eliminating every food you enjoy. My goal is to make metabolic health easier to understand and give you a clear, realistic place to begin. Simple steps. A clear plan forward. Follow this page for practical education about blood sugar, insulin resistance, cravings, fiber, fat burning, and sustainable metabolic health.

A small habit can still make a real difference.

Ending your shower with 30 to 60 seconds of cold water may support your metabolism in a few helpful ways.

Cold exposure can activate brown fat, which helps generate heat by burning energy. Some research also suggests that regular cold exposure may help support insulin sensitivity over time.

You do not need an ice bath to try it.

A simple place to start is finishing your normal shower with a short burst of cold water at the end. Yes, it feels uncomfortable at first, but many people find their body adapts faster than expected.

And this works even better when it’s part of a bigger picture:

Fiber, balanced meals, time-restricted eating, movement, and other small habits that all support better metabolic health.

This is not magic.
It’s just another lever.

If you want to know how I built up to it without overdoing it, comment COLD and I’ll send you my approach.

(Educational only. If you have cardiovascular concerns or other medical issues, check with your clinician before trying cold exposure)

Hangry isn’t a personality trait.

It’s a blood sugar rollercoaster — and it’s not your fault.

Here’s what’s actually happening inside your body.

You eat something high in refined carbs — white bread, pasta, sugar, processed foods.

Your blood sugar spikes fast and hard.

Your pancreas releases insulin to bring it down.

But it often overcorrects, causing a crash below your baseline.

Your body reads that crash as an emergency.

So it releases stress hormones — cortisol and adrenaline — to get your blood sugar back up.

And that’s the exact moment you feel irritable, shaky, and desperate for food.

Usually something sugary.

Which spikes your blood sugar again.

And the whole cycle restarts.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you: This isn’t a willpower problem.

It’s a blood sugar problem.

You’re not snapping at your family because you have a bad temper.

You’re snapping because your body is literally in emergency mode.

The fix is simpler than you think.

Stabilize the spike by pairing fiber and protein at every meal.

When you eat protein and fiber first, they may slow down how fast carbs convert to glucose.

No spike = no crash.

No crash = no stress hormone release.

No stress hormone release = the mood swings, the desperation, the irritability — they often disappear along with it.

Same meals. Same foods. Just eaten in a different order, with the right support.

Comment HANGRY below and I’ll send you the exact protocol. 💛

Muscle cramps? Fatigue? Blood-sugar issues? Magnesium deserves a closer look.

Magnesium is involved in glucose metabolism and normal insulin signaling, and low magnesium status is seen more often in people with type 2 diabetes and metabolic problems.

True magnesium deficiency can cause symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, and muscle cramps — but those symptoms alone do not prove you’re deficient. There are plenty of other possible causes.

Good food sources include leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, beans, nuts, whole grains, and other minimally processed foods.

Some people may benefit from supplementation, but the right approach depends on diet, medications, kidney function, and individual needs. Supplements also are not proven replacements for established diabetes care.

I personally use magnesium as part of my health routine.

Comment MAGNESIUM and I’ll show you what I personally use and how I approach it.

Sugar gets all the attention.

But there’s another culprit quietly driving inflammation and sabotaging your insulin sensitivity — seed oils.

Here’s what’s happening.

Highly processed seed oils like soybean, corn, and canola are extremely high in omega-6 fatty acids.

When omega-6 oils dominate your diet, they may drive you into a chronic, low-grade state of inflammation.

That inflammation may make it harder for your cells to respond to insulin properly.

So your body compensates by pushing insulin levels even higher just to do the same job they’re supposed to do.

Higher insulin = more fat storage. More cravings. More crashes.

It’s a cascade.

The swap.

You don’t have to eliminate oils entirely.

You just have to switch them.

Replace soybean, corn, and canola with olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, or grass-fed tallow and butter for cooking.

Will this fix insulin resistance on its own? No.

But paired with adequate fiber and protein — the two other pieces we’ve talked about — it removes one more thing working against you.

Small swap. Real impact over time.

That’s how real metabolic change happens — not through one dramatic change, but through removing the obstacles one by one.

Comment OILS below and I’ll send you my full swap list. 💛

Five numbers can reveal a lot about your metabolic health:

1. Waist circumference: over 35” women / 40” men
2. Blood pressure: 130/85 or higher
3. Fasting glucose: 100 mg/dL or higher
4. Triglycerides: 150 mg/dL or higher
5. HDL: below 50 women / below 40 men

Having 3 or more may meet the criteria for Metabolic Syndrome—a cluster of conditions associated with increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.

These numbers often travel together, and insulin resistance can be an important part of the picture.

The goal isn’t to obsess over one number. It’s to understand what the group of numbers may be telling you about your metabolic health.

Comment MARKERS and I’ll send you the five-number checklist.

Top 3 reasons you may feel puffy after salty foods:

1. Salt can make your body hold onto more water.
2. Most sodium is hidden in packaged and restaurant foods.
3. If your body is already struggling with blood sugar, heavily salted processed foods can make puffiness and fluid retention worse.

That doesn’t mean you need to fear salt.

It means the problem may be bigger than the salt shaker sitting on your table.

A lot of sodium is hiding in:
• packaged foods
• deli meats
• sauces
• breads
• restaurant meals
• salty snacks

And if insulin is staying elevated too often, your kidneys may hold onto more sodium and fluid too.

A better place to start is:
• less processed food
• more fiber and whole foods
• better blood sugar support
• more movement after meals

Comment SALT, and I’ll share the practical metabolic protocol I personally use.

Educational information only. Persistent swelling or elevated blood pressure should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Same meal. Same calories. Same exact foods.

But the blood sugar response may be completely different depending on the order you eat it in.

Here’s what happens.

If you eat your carbs first — rice, bread, pasta — on an empty stomach, your blood sugar may spike fast and hard.

Your body absorbs all that glucose quickly.

Your insulin surges to handle it.

Your energy crashes an hour or two later.

You feel hungry again.

But if you flip the order.

Eat your vegetables first.

Then your protein.

Then save the carbs for last.

The fiber in the vegetables and the protein you ate first may create a kind of buffer that slows down how fast the sugar from your carbs hits your bloodstream.

Instead of a sharp spike, you get a gentle, gradual rise.

Your blood sugar stays more stable.

Your energy stays steadier.

Your hunger stays managed.

The science backs this up.

Studies have shown that this simple order swap may lower the blood sugar spike after a meal by up to 40% — same exact meal, just eaten in a different sequence.

You don’t have to change what you eat.

You just have to change the order.

Carbs last.

That’s it.

Comment “ORDER” below and I’ll send you a simple meal template to follow. 💛

Shaky, dizzy, irritable, foggy, or intensely hungry a few hours after eating?

Your blood sugar may be rising quickly—and then falling just as fast.

This can happen after meals loaded with sugar or refined carbohydrates, especially when they are eaten without enough fiber, protein, or healthy fat.

But symptoms alone do not confirm low blood sugar.

If it keeps happening, check your glucose during the episode and speak with your healthcare provider.

To help prevent the spike-and-drop cycle, build meals around:

• Fiber
• Protein
• Healthy fat
• Fewer refined carbohydrates eaten alone

Comment CRASH, and I’ll share the fiber-first strategy and product-supported tools I personally use to support steadier blood sugar after meals.
