Someone can desperately want to stop drinking and still be afraid of life without it.

For some people, alcohol or drugs have become a way to quiet anxiety or push painful feelings out of reach. Recognizing the harm doesn’t automatically give them another way to cope. That part needs care, too.

At LifeSpring Recovery in Andover, we bring medical support and therapy together so people have help with what happens physically and emotionally during recovery. Treatment is individualized, with trauma-informed care and skills for managing difficult feelings.

Our residential program gives people time to work on those skills with professional support and others in recovery. We also help families understand how to support their loved one and begin planning for continued care before treatment ends.

You don’t have to know exactly what you need before reaching out. You can be worried about someone you love, unsure about treatment, or simply tired of trying to manage everything alone.

You don’t need to know why someone stopped drinking to respect their decision.

At your next cookout, family dinner or football watch party, let someone turn down alcohol without teasing them or asking for an explanation. They should get to decide how much of their story they share.

According to the CDC, social drinking traditions at work can leave people in recovery feeling excluded. That deserves some thought when we plan gatherings with friends and family, too.

Keep nonalcoholic drinks easy to find, and make time together about something other than drinking. When you’re making plans with someone you know is in recovery, ask privately what would help them feel comfortable rather than deciding for them.

At LifeSpring Recovery of Andover, we help people prepare for life after treatment through relapse-prevention planning and connections to ongoing support. Friends and family have an opportunity to make those everyday moments more welcoming.

"I can handle it on my own." According to a national survey released this summer, that's the most common reason people struggling with drugs or alcohol don't get help.

Wanting to handle things yourself makes sense. But quitting alone can be harder than people expect, and with alcohol or anti-anxiety medications like Xanax, stopping suddenly can be dangerous. Medical detox exists so you don't have to white-knuckle it or put your health at risk.
